Uttar Pradesh won the Sub Junior Girls’ National Football Championship 2025-26 Tier 2, defeating Kerala 2-1 in the final at the RKM Ashrama Ground, Narainpur, Chhattisgarh, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

Both teams had earlier secured promotion to Tier 1 for the upcoming edition as the finalists of this season.

After an intense first half, the deadlock was broken in the 53rd minute when Uttar Pradesh’s Niti Kumari converted the rebound after her penalty kick was saved initially. In the 65th minute, Garima capitalised off a weak clearance from the Kerala goalkeeper, making it 2-0 for Uttar Pradesh.

Kerala stepped up and struck back immediately in the 66th minute, with Evana Biju finishing off a long ball from Samantha Saan to make it 2-1. Despite their late chase for an equaliser, Kerala were unsuccessful in breaking down the Uttar Pradesh defence.

MALDA/BEHRAMPORE: Rinki Kumari Chauhan was on a rampage as Bihar routed Gujarat 5-0 in a Group B match of the Sub-Junior Girls’ National Football Championship Tier 1 in Malda on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.

A product of the Rani Laxmi Bai Sports academy in the district Siwan in Bihar, Ranki has so far scored eight goals in two matches. On Wednesday, she destroyed Gujarat almost singlehandedly, scoring all the five goals.

Bihar, who led 1-0 at half time, have so far scored 15 goals in the tournament, without conceding one. With six points from two matches, they are now strong contenders for a place in the semi-finals.

In another Group B match, Karnataka proved too good for Meghalaya and won 6-1. Derrin Treesa Sumesh was the leading scorer for the winners with three goals. Pratiksha (2) and Nida Shekih were the other scorers. Meghalaya’s lone goal came through Shirley Nongkhlaw Marbaniang.

In Group A, in Malda, Manipur notched up their second consecutive victory defeating Tamil Nadu 7-2 after trailing 1-2 at the breather. While Chingkhamayum Redima Devi and Laitonjam Linthoi Chanu scored two goals each, Laishram Rani Devi, Thoudam Malemnganbi Devi and Dasila Senjam were the other scorers. Sahana K and S Dharshini struck both goals for Tamil Nadu in the first half.

The Group A witnessed another high-scoring match as Haryana were runaway 9-0 winners over Mizoram. The bulk of the scoring was done by Nidhi, who found the mark five times. Revika and Sonia scored two each to complete the rout.

Jharkhand put four past Arunachal Pradesh in the final of the Hero Sub Junior Girls’ National Football Championship at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Thursday (20 June, 2019).

Soni Munda and Basanti Lakra scored a brace each to help Jharkhand waltz to their first National Football Championship victory this season. Earlier this year, the state had also made it to the Final of the Hero Junior Girls’ NFC in Kolhapur where they lost to Himachal Pradesh.

Jharkhand got off to a quick start in the first half itself as they looked to use the width of the pitch to stretch the Arunachal defence. It took them only 15 minutes to break the deadlock, though. Forward Soni Munda made the perfect run in between the two Arunachal centrebacks, as she was played into the box before she placed it past the keeper and into the net.

Arunachal tried to get their game going but the Jharkhand defence kept cutting them off in the final third. Soon, Jharkhand doubled their lead through Basanti Lakra, who only had to tap it into the empty net after Arunachal keeper Bumpasai Manyu collided with one of the attackers.

The Jharkhand defence was at the top of its game on the day as they neutralised the threat posed by the Arunachal duo of Simran Zeeba and Tallo Ana. The former, who is the captain of the North-eastern side, had even released the latter, who is the top scorer of the tournament, with an aerial through ball towards the end of the first half, but it was expertly cut out by the defence.

Jharkhand captain Salina Kumari came into her own in the second half, chasing down lost causes which led to the third goal of the evening. The left winger hounded after a stray ball that was somewhat equidistant between the two Arunachal centre backs and the goalkeeper. She managed to get to the ball before the onrushing keeper and cut past her to expose an empty goal.

While the angle was too tight for Salina, she simply squared it across the face of the goal for Lakra to tap it into an empty net and score her second of the game. Arunachal did try to get some of their counter-attacks going through captain Simran Zeeba but the North-eastern side’s wingers Zila Kamchi and Bamang Yaro were played too narrow and were often crowded out by the Jharkhand midfield and defence.

The highest scorer of the tournament, Tallo Ana, was heavily marked and often had to drop deep into the midfield, in order to find space, which meant that Arunachal missed her goalscoring instinct up front.

Arunachal Pradesh Head Coach Kipa Bharat brought on Gumku Rani, while Ana operated in the hole. This freed up some space for the latter, who had the perfect opportunity to pull one back. With a little over 10 minutes of regulation time left on the clock, Rani played Ana through on goal, but the latter’s out-step shot lacked any venom, as Jharkhand keeper Jyotsna Bara slid in to claim the ball.

However, this push from Arunachal Pradesh came too late as they ran out of time. With just a few minutes of regulation time left, Soni Munda scored her brace, as she slipped the ball past the Arunachal keeper to make it four. There was no coming back from that, and Jharkhand ran away with their first National Football Championship title of the season.

Arunachal Pradesh were as dominant as ever against Gujarat, as Tallo Ana went on to score a hat-trick in a convincing 4-0 win against Gujarat and enter the final.

With the three goals in this game, Ana moved her tally to 15 goals, the highest so far, in this edition of the tournament.

The North-eastern side got off the blocks early on, as Tallo Ana rounded off Gujarat goalkeeper Ankitaben Prajapati Thakor, before firing it into the net in the sixth minute. Arunachal doubled their lead just before the water-break, when captain Simran Zeeba struck a long-range free-kick that sailed over the Gujarat keeper and into the net.

Gujarat did come out with more initiative in the second half, but they soon ran out of steam, and Arunachal capitalised on that, as Ana netted her second from a goalmouth melee. The Arunachal striker put the proverbial cherry on top of the cake, when she dribbled past the Gujarat defence on the 80th minute and slotted it past the keeper to make it four.

Arunachal are now set to square-off against Jharkhand in the final on Thursday, June 20, at the Barabati Stadium, in Cuttack. The match will kick-off at 03:30 PM.

Jharkhand completed a thrilling victory over neighbours Bihar, as they pounced back in the last 5 minutes of the regulation time to overcome a two-goal deficit. While the match itself ended with a 3-3 scoreline, Jharkhand pipped it 4-3 on penalties.

It was a close start to the game as Jharkhand looked to take the early initiative passing it around. However, Bihar took the lead against the run of play, as Lucky Kumari broke free on the counter and plonked it over the keeper’s head.

They soon doubled that lead, when captain Pallavi Kumari tapped a square pass across the face of the goal into the net. However, Jharkhand took just a minute to pull one back, as Soni Munda ran on to a low cross and put it past the Bihar keeper. Bihar captain Pallavi, however, ensured that her side headed into the tunnel with a two-goal lead at half time, as she nodded in a cross in the third minute of time added on at the end of the first half.

Jharkhand came hard at Bihar in the second half, and only got the fruits of their labour in the last couple of minutes of regulation time, when captain Salina Kumari pulled one back, before Soni Munda scored her second to level the scores at 3-3.

With the scores still level after Extra Time, Jharkhand went on to win it on penalties, as Sindhu Kumari and Sabara Khatun missed two early penalties to put Bihar on the back foot. While Sonam Kumari also missed the fourth penalty for Jharkhand, Modita Kujur converted their fifth to put them in the final.

Excerpts:

Sub juniors will be held in Orissa, How well is the team’s preparation and what is the atmosphere?

Firmin: Well, this time we have more time in our hand to prepare for this tournament. Few girls have missed this camp because of their vacations but the ones who have turned up are giving their 100%. They have shown their interest and commitment to this game. My aim is to ensure that they learn as much as possible and as a Coach I want to make sure they are becoming better players.

India will be hosting a FIFA U17 Women World Cup soon what do you make of this tournament for women’s football in India.

Firmin: It is certainly a major boost and very much inspiring factor for the girls in India. Women Footballers especially the young girls will be very excited that the world cup is happening in India and this tournament can lead to inspiring a lot of young girls to take up football professionally.

How are the girls’ participations in WIFA baby leagues? Has it shown improvement in numbers?

Firmin:  Well specifically in U8 leagues you will find a lot of girls are participating alongside and boys and are playing together in the same team. This shows the commitment and interest level. Even for women football, these girls at U8 – U12 are at the right age to get in to the game. So it is definitely an improvement.

Finally, you are coach of the India U15 Girls team, a crucial role now that this team will go on to participate in the U17 world Cup. What do you think of this responsibility and how prepared are you for it?

Firmin: Well, I am not certain, whether I would be leading that team or not, it is up to the federation to appoint or change the coach. However the girls under me are capable and have lot of potential and whoever is the coach we hope the team performs in the World Cup and we can show that even we have an identity in Women football and inspire the next generation of young girls to take up football.

So whoever is the coach he has to give his best for the team and make sure that the girls are doing the same because at the end of the day they are playing and representing 130 crore people of India.

22nd January 2019, Palghar: On Tuesday morning, Mumbai District defeated Nagpur District in the WIFA Inter-District Sub-Junior Girls Championship in Palghar to register their third consecutive Sub-Junior Girls title. In 2017, Mumbai triumphed in Dhule before winning again in Jalgaon (2018) and Palghar (2019) earlier today.

Nagpur came into the final on the back of a thrilling win against Pune. With the score locked at 3-3 in normal time, the match went into the penalties where Nagpur edged Pune 5-4. Meanwhile, Mumbai District had defeated Kolhapur 3-2 in a mouth-watering encounter.

Just like in the semi-final match against Kolhapur, Mumbai started off perfectly after Mehak Lobo opened the scoring in the 4th minute. A well-taken corner by Tanisha Laud was superbly turned in by Mehak who had an outstanding campaign this season as well.

Fourteen minutes later, Tanisha and Mehak combined again as Mehak’s glancing header doubled Mumbai’s lead. Nagpur responded positively after conceding the second goal and defended well to avoid any further goals. But in the second half, Mumbai went all guns blazing as they scored thrice to complete a sensational win.

Priyanka set up Riya D’Souza who scored Mumbai’s third goal before Riya served Angeline Anthony who grabbed the fourth goal in the 44th minute. In the closing stages of the game, Ash D’Silva was set up by Sai Sankhe who bagged Mumbai’s fifth and final goal.
