New Covid wave halts football activites in the city again

According to the latest guidelines issued by the Maharashtra government, Mumbai Football Association has suspended their leagues while the ongoing WIFA women league is likely to share the same fate in the coming days.

The covid pandemic took a massive toll on sports worldwide. It’s been roughly two years for players switching on and off the field. Football in the state of Maharashtra had to share the same impact. Matches and leagues got cancelled in March 2020 when the first wave of Corona hit India.

A year later in March 2021, MFA tried to restart the game by organising MFA Womens league, although the league did get completed, football activities took a hit again after the 2nd wave swept through nation in April. The entire season of MFA leagues had to be called off.

As situation seem to get settled again later in the year, MFA and WIFA started planning to conduct their leagues. While MFA began Super Division and 3rd Division in middle of december, WIFA organised IWL qualifiers in the final weeks of the year. However the current fresh wave of Covid with its variant Omicron seem to halt the game again.

“Since the Maharashtra government has clamped down restrictions from Monday onwards, all MFA league matches scheduled from Monday, 10th January onwards are cancelled till further notice”. Mumbai Football Association released the statement.

As for the WIFA, all the ongoing WIFA Womens league fixtures for 9th January got suspended earlier. According to the reports, the entire league can get suspended until further notice.

Football has been affected in the state of Maharashtra. Players, coaches, supporting staff, everyone got hit by the same intensity. Hopefully, this current break won’t last long, and football will be quickly back in the state.
