AFC Cup 2020 on verge of being cancelled after increasing Covid threat in host nations

Chennai City FC, who are representing India in AFC Cup, had played out a 2-2 draw in their opening group game in march before the tournament came to a halt.

Chennai City FC, who are representing India, had played out a 2-2 draw in their opening group stage game in march before the tournament was brought to a halt.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) might be forced to call off AFC Cup 2020 after the number of cases in the respective host countries saw a spike, according to reports.

AFC had earlier announced their decision to postpone the remaining qualifier rounds of the 2022 World Cup and 2023 Asian Cup to October this year. It was then further postponed to next year with Covid things yet to settle down.

Meanwhile in AFC Cup, after Bengaluru FC bowed out of the competition in qualifier stage, India’s lone representative remains 2018-19 I league winners Chennai City FC. The club is drawn in Group E alongside Basundhara Kings (Bangladesh), TC Sports Club, and Maziya Sports and Recreation Club (both from the Maldives).

All the group E matches were slated to be held in the Maldives while for other groups, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait and Vietnam where supposed to be the host nations. With participating teams finding it difficult to practice due to the increase in Covid cases in their respective countries, AFC is closely monitoring the situations.

Last week, the AFC had postponed the draw ceremony for the AFC Cup knock stages. However, things seemed to have turned worse for the competition as the association is now contemplating to scrap this edition of tournament.
