Mumbai Super League: Mumbai Ultras & Waves FC secure crucial wins to shake up the standings

On Day 2 of the Mumbai Super League final round, Mumbai Ultras and Waves FC picked up vital victories against Brothers WA and Mumbai Soccer Prodigies (MSP), respectively, setting the stage for an intense battle in the playoffs.
Mumbai Ultras edged past Brothers WA in a gripping encounter. Heading into this fixture, Brothers WA had drawn their opening match, while Ultras suffered a defeat against Mumbai Soccer Prodigies. With both teams having previously played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in the playoffs, another high-intensity clash was on the cards.
The first half was dominated by Mumbai Ultras, whose compact formation provided defensive stability while allowing them to hit on the counter more effectively with outnumbering the centre half. Their well-organized backline made it difficult for Brothers WA to break into the box, while Brothers, in turn, managed to keep Ultras’ attacking threat in check.

However, Ultras eventually found a breakthrough when Joyson, unmarked in midfield, quickly turned and threaded a precise lob ball to Shreyas just outside the box. With the goalkeeper rushing out, Shreyas instinctively finished with his first touch to give Ultras the lead just before halftime.
Early in the second half, Ultras doubled their advantage through Joyson, who cleverly feinted a central run before sprinting down the right flank to latch onto a through ball and slot home. But as the game progressed, Ultras lost control, and Brothers WA began dictating play.
Their persistence paid off when Shubham Chafe pounced on a opportunity after Alymer’s sublime through met the run of shubham who swiftly finished past the keeper. The goal reignited hopes of a comeback, but Ultras sealed the match in style. Shahid’s cross found Shreyas Zele, who struck a stunning half-volley from outside the box to make it 3-1, securing a crucial win that brought Ultras back into playoff contention.

Mumbai Soccer Prodigies came into the match with strong momentum, having dominated their first game against Ultras. In contrast, Waves FC had begun their first match with a draw against Brothers WA.
MSP started aggressively but were wasteful in front of goal, missing two clear-cut chances in the first half very similar storyline against ultras in the first match. Nihal Colaco, after receiving a pass at the edge of the box, skillfully turned past his marker but fired his shot just wide of the post. Shortly after, Deep combined with Swatej to break into the box but chose to shoot instead of squaring it to Akshay, only to miss the target again.
Those missed chances proved costly as Waves FC, despite creating little, made their first real opportunity count. Just before halftime, Sunny Koli whipped in a curling cross to the far post, where Angel controlled and laid it off for Shubham Navelkar, who finished with composure—placing a left-footed strike into the bottom right corner to give Waves the lead.
With growing frustration and pressure mounting on MSP, their defense started showing cracks. The away crowd added to the tension, creating a charged atmosphere that played in Waves FC’s favor. Nihal, MSP’s main attacking threat, found himself isolated in the second half, receiving very little service.

Despite MSP’s struggles, their young goalkeeper produced a miraculous one-handed reflex save to deny Shubham’s thunderous strike and keep his team in the game. However, Waves FC sealed their victory with a second goal, capitalizing on their third clear-cut chance. Shubham and Sunny combined again, with Shubham chipping a delicate ball over two defenders for Sunny, who finished clinically into the bottom left corner.
With this win, Waves FC now sit atop the table, making the playoff race even more unpredictable.
The competition remains wide open, with every team still in contention for a spot for promotion/championship. Up next, Mumbai Soccer Prodigies will face Brothers WA, in what will be a full-circle moment as they close their campaign against the same team they started against. Meanwhile, Mumbai Ultras will take on Waves FC on February 14 in a crucial clash.
