India U20 Top Group B After Hard-Fought Draw Against Bangladesh

by Chandler D'silva March 30, 2026

The Indian U20 men’s team secured top spot in Group B of the SAFF U20 Championship 2026 after playing out a competitive 1-1 draw against Bangladesh at the National Stadium in Malé. Having already confirmed their semi-final berth with a convincing win over Pakistan, the result ensured the Blue Colts progressed as group leaders.

India started the match with composure, gradually settling into their rhythm after a cautious opening. While Bangladesh looked to stretch the play using width, India’s defensive unit remained organised and disciplined. The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Omang Dodum delivered a precise corner, allowing Vishal Yadav to rise between defenders and head home his second goal of the tournament.

India looked in control for large parts of the first half and nearly doubled their lead before the break. Dodum once again caused problems from a set-piece, but Jodric Abranches’ header drifted wide. However, just when India seemed set to head into halftime with the advantage, Bangladesh struck in extended stoppage time. Md Abdul Riyad Fahim capitalised on a lapse in concentration to level the scores following a corner.

The second half saw India regain control of possession and dictate the tempo of the game. The Blue Colts created chances, particularly from set-pieces, with Dodum continuing to be a key influence in attack. Despite pushing forward in search of a winner, including a late opportunity that narrowly slipped away, India were unable to find the decisive goal.

The match ended in a draw, but it was enough for India to finish at the top of Group B. Bangladesh secured second place, while India now shift their focus to the semi-finals, where they will face Bhutan.
