Lachenpa Stars as Mumbai City FC Edge Mohun Bagan to Go Top
Mumbai City FC produced a disciplined and resilient performance to secure a crucial 1–0 victory over Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the Indian Super League 2025–26, climbing to the top of the standings in the process.
The game began with Mohun Bagan controlling possession, while Mumbai City looked to hit on the counter. The Islanders created the more dangerous openings early on, with Noufal PN and Lallianzuala Chhangte both testing the defence, while Mohun Bagan also threatened through Liston Colaco.
Mumbai City made their breakthrough in the 27th minute through a well-crafted move. A quick switch of play opened space for Noufal PN, who calmly slotted the ball into the far corner to give the visitors the lead.
Mohun Bagan responded strongly and pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but were repeatedly denied by an inspired Phurba Lachenpa. The Mumbai goalkeeper produced a string of outstanding saves, including a crucial stop to deny Jason Cummings’ header before the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with the Mariners dominating possession and creating chances. Dimitri Petratos and Jamie Maclaren both came close, while a potential equaliser was ruled out for offside, adding to the frustration of the hosts.
Despite sustained pressure, Mumbai City remained compact and organised defensively. Lachenpa continued to shine between the posts, making key saves to preserve the lead, while the backline held firm against late attacks.
In the end, Noufal’s first-half strike proved enough as Mumbai City FC secured a massive win, ending Mohun Bagan’s unbeaten run and moving to the top of the table with a strong statement performance.
