Colaba Veterans Football Championship Returns for its 6th Season

by FC January 23, 2026

The Colaba Veterans Football Championship is back for its sixth edition.

Started in 2020 by the Colaba Veterans Footballers, this tournament has become a key event for the local community. It is an exclusive competition designed specifically for both former and current players from Colaba, focused on celebrating their lifelong passion for the game.

This year’s tournament is set to kick off on 25th January at the Cooperage Ground. A total of 8 teams will participate, divided into two groups to compete for the trophy.

Official Launch and Ceremony

To mark the start of the new season, a special trophy unveiling and jersey distribution ceremony was held. The event was honored by Shri Makrand Narwekar, Municipal Corporator, who presented the kits to the veteran players. His presence added to the excitement as the teams prepare to take the field once again at one of Mumbai’s most historic football venues.

The Deep Roots of Football in Colaba

Football has a very long history in Mumbai, dating back to the late 19th century. The sport was first brought to the city by British soldiers and sailors. Because Colaba was so close to the docks and military barracks, it became one of the first places where the game really began to spread.

Over many decades, this area has remained a hub for the sport. Today, Colaba is home to many local football clubs and associations. These groups do more than just play matches; they are essential for training young talent, especially for children from underprivileged communities who might not otherwise have the chance to play organized sports.

Supporting the Next Generation

While the veterans take center stage this week, the tournament also highlights the importance of grassroots football. Community games and street football are still very common in the lanes of Colaba. Many of the young players watching these veterans aspire to follow in their footsteps and reach the national level.

By organizing this championship, the Colaba Veterans Footballers are keeping the local football culture alive. The structured training programs and local leagues continue to provide a path for young players to grow, ensuring that Colaba’s football legacy stays strong for years to come.
