Sunny Thakur’s strike helps Hope United edge over MH Oranje in a tense MPL Showdown
Hope United FC earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over MH Oranje FC in the Mumbai Premier League, a victory that served as a measure of revenge following their heavy Harwood Champions League defeat to the same opponents.
The match was defined by fine margins, with Hope United’s striker Sunny Thakur scoring the only goal, and MH Oranje left ruing missed chances, particularly in the second half.
The game began with both teams cautiously feeling each other out, rotating possession but struggling to find rhythm in the final third. The first real threat came from Oranje midway through the first half when Kartik Rao, launched an inch-perfect long ball over the right flank, finding Dhannesh. Dhannesh controlled the pass before whipping in a teasing cross to the far post, where Pratham Ghatnur met it with a towering header that narrowly sailed wide of the far upright.
Moments after this chance, Hope United capitalized on a piece of brilliance from their creative midfielder, Shivam. Positioned centrally, Shivam feigned a move to deceive his marker before threading a perfectly weighted through ball to Sunny Thakur, who was lurking at the edge of the box. Sunny’s first touch was sublime, allowing him to glide past two defenders before expertly rounding the goalkeeper to slot the ball into an open net.
MH Oranje responded well and came agonizingly close to an equalizer shortly after. A set-piece delivery caused chaos in the box, with Kamie rising to head towards goal. His effort, however, smacked off the woodwork. The ball fell back to him, and in a moment of audacity, he attempted a spectacular outer foot shot that grazed the post.
The first half was a measured affair, with both teams controlling possession but failing to carve out clear-cut opportunities. However, the second half saw a different Oranje side emerge—more aggressive and searching desperately for a goal.
The first chance of the second period fell to substitute Duane. Kuivao, pulling the strings from midfield, delivered a defense-splitting pass into the feet of Duane, who found himself inside a congested penalty box. With a swift turn, Duane evaded his marker but lacked composure, sending his shot wide the bar, much to the dismay of the Oranje bench.
Oranje continued to press, keeping the majority of possession while Hope United retreated, relying on sporadic counterattacks. However, despite their pressure, Oranje’s costly mistakes in the middle of the park allowed Hope United to launch two or three quick counters, though neither Sunny Thakur nor Asad could convert these chances into goals, missing the opportunity to seal the game.
In the dying moments of the match, MH Oranje had one last chance to snatch a point. Khatib, in a dazzling solo effort, beat Sawan on the left flank with a sequence of impressive skills before delivering a cross that found Yogesh Kadam inside the six-yard box. The ball fell perfectly for Yogesh, but the forward, perhaps caught off guard by the precision of the delivery, mistimed his attempt, letting Hope United off the hook.
In the final play of the game, as the referee prepared to blow for full time, MH Oranje launched one last, desperate and ambitious attack. Dhannesh and Khatib combined brilliantly on the right, with Dhannesh curling a cross that seemed destined to go out of play. However, Dhananjay kept it alive, heading the ball back into the box. Unmarked and with time, Yogesh Kadam rose to meet the ball, but his header smashed against the post. The rebound fell to him again, but with defenders closing in, his hurried effort failed to hit the target, leaving Oranje agonizingly close to snatching a point.
Hope United’s solitary first-half goal proved enough to secure a valuable three points, allowing them to climb the league table. MH Oranje, despite dominating possession and creating a host of chances in the second half, were left ruing their lack of clinical finishing. Their attacking form, which had been so lethal in the Harwood Champions League, seemed to desert them on this occasion, as they failed to break through Hope United defense.
