Mariners ends 23-Year Wait for Durand Cup Glory in thrilling final clash

Mariners 23-Year wait Durand Cup

Mariners clinched their 17th Durand Cup title in a fiercely contested battle against arch-rivals East Bengal to end a 23-year wait

In a captivating showdown that marked the 132nd edition of the Durand Cup Final, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal locked horns in a fiercely contested battle that saw the Mariners emerge victorious, securing their first Durand Cup title in 23 years. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with moments of brilliance and high-intensity action.

First Half: A Stalemate of Strategies and Challenges

The initial half of the game unfolded as a strategic battle, with both teams attempting to seize an early advantage. Despite numerous chances, neither side managed to break the deadlock, setting the stage for a tightly contested affair. The Mariners, showcasing dominance in midfield and ball possession, aimed to control the rhythm of the game.

East Bengal, meanwhile, exhibited resilience after absorbing the initial pressure. Players like Nandha and Mahesh unleashed relentless attacks on the Mariners’ defense, striving to find openings. However, a significant setback occurred for Carles Cuadrat’s East Bengal when Jordan Elsey was forced to leave the field due to an ankle injury, leaving them with a crucial defensive gap. The physical intensity of the match was evident, culminating in the display of five yellow cards by the end of the first half.

Second Half: Drama, Red Cards, and the Decisive Strike

The second half unleashed even more drama and intensity. In the 62nd minute, Mohun Bagan found themselves down to 10 men when Anirudh Thapa received his second yellow card, resulting in a red card for a high-boot challenge on Siverio’s face.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Mohun Bagan continued to push forward. Manvir Singh initiated an instant impact, setting up Hugo Boumous with a low cross from the right. However, Hugo’s effort found the side netting, leaving the Mariners’ faithful holding their breath.

East Bengal, determined to capitalize on the situation, saw Naorem Mahesh take an ambitious attempt, but the ball found its way into the safe hands of Mariners’ keeper Vishal Kaith.

In the 71st minute, the match took a decisive turn. Dimi Petratos orchestrated a swift counter-attack, initiating it from deep within East Bengal’s half. In an astonishing turn of events, the East Bengal midfield and defense inexplicably retreated, granting Petratos the time and space to unleash a fierce strike on goal. Petratos’s shot took a slight deflection off defender Jose Pardo before nestling into the back of the net, sending the Mohun Bagan faithful into jubilation.

East Bengal, despite their one-man advantage, struggled to find the equalizer, allowing Mohun Bagan to maintain their grip on the game. With their 17th Durand Cup title secured, Mohun Bagan celebrated their triumphant return to the winner’s circle.

In a contest filled with suspense, emotions, and remarkable moments, Mohun Bagan’s victory in the Durand Cup Final will be etched in the annals of Indian football history as they break a long-standing title drought with this impressive triumph.
