Western Railway holds Mumbai Customs to a goalless draw

Despite some assertive football from Mumbai Customs, Western Railway showed brave character to hold the defending champions to a goalless draw in an Elite Division tie of the MFA at the Cooperage

Mumbai Customs started with a flourish but poor finishing badly let them down. Strikers Marc D’Souza and Dhawal Waghela were both guilty of missing easy chances in the first 10 minutes itself. At the other end, Western’s defensive setup was rock solid and blocked everything Customs threw at them.

As the game progressed Customs continued to make a number of forays towards the Western citadel while Western Railways looked to work on counterattacks. Customs midfielders Praneel Mendon and Monish Bhamre controlled the midfield quite well to fancy some good moves.

In the 42nd minute, Reuben D’Souza’s left-footer half volley was blocked by the skipper Lihaz Koya.

After switching ends, Western started fighting back as they took the attack to their opponents and the Customs defense almost cracked. In the 63rd minute, Vijish’s 30-yard rocket launcher just went close to the post.

Customs came close to scoring in the 73rd minute, when veteran defender Hekmat Singh, fresh from his double hat-trick in the previous game, struck the crossbar off a cross in from winger Leander Dharmai. In the 80th min, customs almost made it 1-0 when Monish Bhamre got hold of a lofted ball from Praneel Mendon but failed to find the net inside the six-yard box.

It was a day for Western defender Vijish who manned the defense well and repeatedly cut short the numerous moves created by Customs.

FT: Western Railway 0 – 0 Mumbai Customs
