Ranking FC Goa’s top five biggest wins by goal margin
Over the course of six seasons of the league, Gaurs have produced some of the most attacking brand football to have ever played on Indian grounds. Here we take a look at five of their biggest wins.
FC Goa are widely considered as the most exciting teams to watch in the entire Indian Super League since its inception back in 2014. With the likes of stalwarts such as Joffre, Dudu Omagbemi, Reinaldo, Manuel Lanzarote and most recently Ferran ‘Coro’ Corominas to have played for the Gaurs, they have continued to maintain their reputation as a free-scoring team.
In this article, we take a look down the memory lane to recap some of the biggest wins secured by FC Goa in terms of the best goal margin.
#5 Kerala Blasters FC 1 – 5 FC Goa (ISL Season 2)
The second season of the ISL saw them establish themselves as one of the best sides in India. In the penultimate match of the league stage, they showcased their strength as they stamped their authority over Kerala Blasters with a dominating 5-1 win.
They faced off against the Yellow Army at the intimidating Kochi stadium but were unfazed by the massive crowd support for the home team. Goa were powered by a hat-trick scored by their Brazilian recruit Reinaldo. Jofre Mateu and Mandar Rao Desai scored on either side of the three goals by Reinaldo to cap off a successful outing for the Gaurs in Kochi. They went on to finish at the top of the league standings but eventually lost out to Chennaiyin FC in the ISL Final.
#4 Delhi Dynamos FC 1 – 5 FC Goa (ISL Season 4)
The fourth gameweek of the ISL Season 4 witnessed the FC Goa side impose a big win over the Delhi Dynamos at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
The match began with the two sides being inseparable for almost the entirety of the first half in Delhi However, the Spanish pairing of Coro and Manuel Lanzarote combined well to notch up two quick goals to get Goa the advantage going into the second half.
Delhi came out with renewed fervor and even cut down the lead by half as Nigerian striker Kalu Uche struck near the hour mark. Goa held off the Delhi attack to keep their superiority and then capitalized on the momentum to strike three quick goals in the final stretch of the match to make it 5-1 on the board.
An own goal by Delhi’s Pritam Kotal started the onslaught as Adrian Colunga and Manuel Arana, both of whom had replaced Coro and Lanzarote respectively added the other two goals to pile the misery on the Dynamos.
#3 FC Goa 5 – 0 Mumbai City FC (ISL Season 5)
FC Goa took on familiar foes Mumbai City FC at the Fatorda Stadium in the early league rounds of the fifth season of the ISL. With both sides packed with attacking talent to the brim, the Gaurs turned up and smashed the Mumbaikars for five goals without answer.
Coro began the scoring with a penalty early in the match to put Goa ahead on the scoresheet. A well-battled first half of the game saw the home side maintain their solitary goal lead into the second period.
The Gaurs produced some high intensity action in the second half of the match as the feisty winger Jackichand Singh scored in the 55th minute with the assist from right-back Seriton Fernandes. The Spanish midfield maestro added the third goal just after the stroke of the hour to take Goa in a comfortable position.
Coro was substituted in the 82nd minute with fellow Spaniard Miguel Palanca coming on to replace and the change proved to be impactful within no time. Palanca scored twice within the space of six minutes to make it 5-0 in the favour of the home team and complete a comprehensive win over Mumbai.
#2 Jamshedpur FC 0 – 5 FC Goa (ISL Season 6)
Last season’s eighteen round of matches saw FC Goa produce the best away performance by an ISL side thrashing Jamshedpur FC with a 5-0 scoreline at the Furnace.
It was the Hugo Boumous show all around as the Moroccan scored two and created two goals in the match as FC Goa allowed no room for the home side to crawl back in the game. Along with Boumous, Coro, Mourtada Fall and Jackichand Singh registered their name on the scoresheet.
Interestingly, after the first goal was scored by Coro in the 11th minute, it was fairly equal on the pitch as both sides battled on through the match. Goa turned on the screws towards the end of the second half as Boumous doubled the lead in the 70th minute. Three more goals were added to the scoreline within a space of 20 minutes as the Gaurs rounded off a thumping victory over Jamshedpur FC.
#1 FC Goa 7 – 0 Mumbai City FC (ISL Season 2)
Dudu celebrates his hat-trick as Gaurs thrashed Islanders 7-0 to register their biggest win
The biggest win ever in any ISL match came in this fixture as the FC Goa team demolished their opposition Mumbai City FC with a 7-0 win on home turf. With the large crowd at the Fatorda Stadium behind their backs, Gaurs went on a tear against the Islanders ripping their defence apart .
After a fairly timid first half of the match, Thongkhosiem Haokip netted the first goal in the 34th minute which ignited the spark on the night. Nigerian striker Dudu Omagbemi made it 2-0 before the end of the first 45 minutes.
What followed was an onslaught of attack on the Mumbai goal as both Haokip and Dudu completed their hat-tricks with twin strikes in the second half. The cherry on top was the goal by Reinaldo in the final minute of the match to cap off a 7-star night for the Gaurs. An interesting fact from the match was that FC Goa enjoyed just 52% of the ball possession through the ninety minutes.
