WIFA Women’s Championship 2018 – As things stand
It has been over a week since the WIFA Women’s Championship 2018-19 campaign has gone underway at the Cooperage Stadium. There were been some twists and turns that left the spectators in awe. Last season’s finalist UPSA plummet to defeat while the likes of Bodyline SC, PIFA, FC Mumbaikars cruised to victories.
In the opening game of the Championship, FC Kolhapur City held Mumbai’s Kenkre FC to a 1-1 draw which was an entertaining encounter at the Cooperage Stadium. Kenkre’s lethal attack was well-dealt by FC Kolhapur City who was hardly vulnerable throughout the game. Although on Day 2, FC Kolhapur City got their reward after a well-deserved 3-2 win over Football Leaders Academy (FLA).
Subhadra Sahu, Mrunal Khot, and Pratiksh Mithari scored one each to secure all three points for the debutant Kolhapur-based side. Meanwhile, for FLA, Lavanya Vaity bagged a brace of goals which proved nothing but consolation goals.
Favorites PIFA starred in their opening match against Bombay Gymkhana, another debutant side, which saw them score eleven goals past their counterparts. Right from the kick-off, PIFA went all guns blazing against an under pressure Bombay Gymkhana defense. Rani Bhowmick, Adam Muriel, and Namrata Thakur scored two goals each, whereas, Tripti Deep, Pratima Mukhia, Signorina Thapa, Deepika Masurkar, and Sibani Sharma scored apiece.
Strong contenders Bodyline SC, inspired by prolific Nisha Singh‘s hat-trick, brushed past Thane’s Football School of India (FSI) 3-1 to get going in the Championship. FC Mumbaikars‘ followed PIFA and Bodyline SC and registered a hard-fought 2-0 win over last season’s surprise package United Poona Sports Club (UPSA). Barnali Karar‘s twin strikes were enough for FCM to snatch all three points on Sunday evening.
After losing their first game, earlier today, a second-half strike by Neha Ture opened Football Leaders Academy‘s account as they deservedly edged past FSI 1-0 to win their first game of the season. The Championship is set to resume from 1st November onwards when Bodyline SC will play Kenkre FC, while, FC Mumbaikars will meet Future Star.
