Nixon Rodrigues’ stunning freekick fires St Paul into the first division semifinal
Mumbai: St Paul S.C defeated Steadfast by 1-0 in their Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA), First Division Quarterfinal match held at St Xavier’s ground, Parel on 27th April 2017. i.e Thursday evening.
A gritty performance from Don Lawson’s side saw them book a semifinal spot in what was a nasty affair. A game where St. Paul overcame the physical nature of the opposition and fired on all cylinders.
Both teams came into this match knowing the stakes. A semifinal spot awaited the winner and nothing less than a win was going to let them get there. St Paul started the brighter of the two and looked threatening in the final third. But an organized Steadfast defense and wasteful St Paul attack in front of goal prevented a goal in the 1st half. Towards the end of the half, the score was deadlocked at 0-0.
The breakthrough of the match came in the 53rd minute, a peach of a free kick from Nixon Rodrigues bulged the net giving St Paul S.C the vital goal to lead the game. A goal well deserved. According to a trusted source, the match was a physical affair with both teams locking horns for a place in the semis. St. Paul withered the physical play and came out on top. The physical nature of the game can be seen on the cards shown with each side picking up three yellow cards and Steadfast finishing with ten men. A red card to Cedric D’Mello. Nonetheless, the win also secures St Paul’s Super Division place next season.
