Union Bank of India dent ONGC’s title hopes

Union Bank of India produced a gutsy performance as they held title chasing ONGC in a 2-2 draw at the Goan’s Sports Association Ground in the Elite Division of the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) on Tuesday, 26th May 2015.

The draw meant ONGC no longer have their fate in their own hands and would need help from Kenkre if they are to have any chance of winning the Elite Division title.

The signs of an upset were in the air fairly early in the afternoon when, Union Bank of India grabbed the lead through Neehar Mukne in the 11th minute.

But ONGC did well to show their class and get back into the game with a 32nd minute equalizer from Tarif Ahammed which swung the momentum back in ONGC’s favour in the game.

UBI managed to keep ONGC at bay till the break as both the teams went into the break level at 1-1.

But ONGC who were smelling blood, stormed out in the second half and seized the initiative just three minutes from the restart as Akshar V.S scored for the Oilmen.

But ONGC seemed to lose their way midway through the second half as Union Bank began to put the ONGC rearguard under pressure. UBI stunned ONGC in the 72nd minute, when Titus Uttankar scored for the Bankers to level the scores at 2-2.

ONGC never really recovered from that blow and had to settle for a point.

The draw saw ONGC cut the gap on Air India to two points, but having played a game more. So Air India could have the title wrapped up before the two go head to head with a win over Kenkre FC.

UBI pulled off a great coup, taking a point off the might ONGC, a result which made up for the loss of points late in the game against Kenkre FC.
