Edu Bedia – Every team has an equal chance to win

Spanish midfielder Edu Bedia, the club’s longest-serving foreign player will be the new Club captain heading into the 2020/21 season. Lenny Rodrigues will serve as the vice-captain of the team.

FC Goa’s longest serving foreign player Edu Bedia speaks about the preparations ahead and the approach going into the upcoming season.

FC Goa has always been a side that has brought in some of the most impactful overseas players in the Indian Super League. From goal poachers like Ferran Corominas upfront to defensive stalwarts like Fall, Pena besides the midfield maestros in Lanzarote and Boumous have also been a class addition to the team. Another player that has managed to make his name for the Gaurs with his fierce play on the pitch is Spanish midfielder Edu Bedia.

The Racing Santander youth product will be playing his third season for the Gaurs and will be a key cog in new coach Juan Ferrando’s side after being named the captain of the team for ISL Season 7.

The players came into the bubble after an extended period of lockdown across the world and the FC Goa coaching staff had a big task at their hand. They had to make sure that the players are fit and prepared well to play under the new coach ahead of the intense ISL season ahead. Bedia spoke about the increased intensity of the trainings and the team’s focus on a tactical approach to implement the coach’s vision on the pitch.

“The one thing I am noticing this year as compared to last season is the intensity of the training sessions. We are working a lot on our tactical elements this year and I believe this will make us stronger than we were last season.”

FC Goa saw somewhat of a mass exodus to Mumbai City FC with their former coach Sergio Lobera leading the way along with key players – Mourtada Fall, Hugo Boumous, Ahmed Jahouh and Mandar Rao Desai.  Edu was asked how much of a challenge would it be for the new gaffer to rebuild the squad and deliver results as has been the custom for the FC Goa team.

“That’s football you know, sometimes players come and sometimes players go. What we are trying to aim and achieve for is to create a good dressing room culture. We are working with the new head coach a lot on the tactical aspect and deliver the results for the team.”

Speaking about the current squad composition for the Gaurs, Edu Bedia is backing the overseas talent as well as the Indian core of the team to do well this season.

“The one thing I can say from what I have seen in the training sessions right now, and having played with the team for the last couple of years, is the fact that I believe the foreigners that we have can give us that extra rhythm that we will need to try and push ourselves all the way to the final. We had a great strength in the team last season as well and I believe we have similar quality again this time.”

FC Goa will begin their ISL Season 7 campaign against familiar foes Bengaluru FC on November 22 at the Fatorda Stadium in Margao, Goa.
