WIFA Women’s Football League: Kenkre FC claim the coveted championship

The 54 days of elusive action concludes as Kenkre FC emerge the champions of the WIFA Women’s Football League 2019.

PIFA SC romped to a 2 goal victory whereas Kenkre qualified to the Indian Women’s League (IWL) ending on equal terms against FC Kolhapur City. It all came down to the last day as Kenkre was sitting on top of the Super Six table with 12 points from 4 games and FC Kolhapur City was at 10 points after playing 4. On the other hand, PIFA was placed at the 3rd spot.

PIFA rode on Sasmita Behera’s brace to clinch the final victory of their WIFA Women’s Football League 2019 campaign. They kickstarted their proceedings with a winning intent. Since the commencement of the game, PIFA posed a threat on Community Football Club of India’s defensive third. Failing to find the net on the first 45 minutes, PIFA made some changes. Leah Poonawala was replaced by Sasmita Behera and Pipilimohanty was subbed off introducing Sibani Sharma. Sasmita’s inclusion made an immediate impact as she changed the game scoring 2 goals at the 74th and 78th minute. Her goals were enough to ensure the final 3 points for PIFA as they left the field having the last laugh.

The second game of the day and the most important match of the entire campaign hosted FC Kolhapur City against Kenkre FC. It all came down to the final matchday as both the teams had an opportunity to claim their rights on the coveted trophy. FC Kolhapur City fell behind by 2 points and had to win the game to bag the trophy. As it stood, Kenkre had their hands on the cup after an enthralling 90 minutes of end to end football, which concluded as a 1-1 draw.

FC Kolhapur City fielded with an ambition to clinch all three points. Since the commencement of the game, Kolhapur was seen playing the ball upfront to threaten the Kenkre defence. As per their motive, FC Kolhapur did have a dream start to the match as Pratiksha opened the scoring at the 16th minute. However, they succumbed to keep the lead as Kenkre had an immediate reply. Soumya whipped the net at the 22nd minute, equalising the scoreline. Kenkre’s defensive prowess maintained the scoreline and the scoreboard read 1-1 as the match concluded.

Kenkre FC emerged victorious claiming the WIFA Women’s Football League Championship and a direct slot to the Indian Women’s League (IWL) – The topmost professional football league for women’s in India. There are ongoing talks that FC Kolhapur City and PIFA might also qualify to the Indian Women’s League, which is set to be decided after WIFA Executive Committee chairs a meeting with the AIFF.
