Juhu Sparks, Companeroes, Springfield & Bombay Gymkhana triumphs

4th March 2018, Mumbai: Sunday turned out to be a quite busy day in Mumbai Football fraternity. A total of four MDFA Super Division matches were played across Mumbai Football Arena (Andheri) and Goans Sports Association Ground (Churchgate). Juhu Sparks and Springfield won their first game of the season, Bombay Gymkhana stopped Salsette’s winning run and Companeroes continued their superb form on an eventful day in Super Division.
Group A: Juhu Sparks (Lestor Creado 45′ and Nickel D’Souza 82′) 3-0 Mumbai Muslims
In a one-sided encounter, Juhu Sparks finally got off the mark as they registered their maiden win of the season with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Mumbai Muslims at Mumbai Football Arena, Andheri. After a decent display throughout the first half, the deadlock was broken at the stroke of half-time through Lestor Creado’s strike.
Nickel D’Souza wrapped the game up in the 82nd minute with a fantastic finish to give Juhu Sparks all three points. This was Mumbai Muslims’ third straight defeat of the season.
Group A: Bombay Gymkhana (Farzaad Dastoor and Siddhant Pinto) 2-1 Salsette FC (Amit Khanna)
In an impressive display, Bombay Gymkhana got the better of Salsette FC 2-1 in a thrilling Group A contest which saw the latter’s unbeaten run coming to a halt. With this result, Bombay Gymkhana is tied with Young Boys at the top of Group A with 10 points.
After a dominant display in the first ten minutes, Gymkhana finally got the breakthrough when Farzaad Dastoor opened the scoring with a fine finish. But in the very next minute, Salsette FC was awarded a penalty when goalkeeper Vineet conceded a foul inside the box. Interestingly, Salsette FC missed from the spot.
Salsette responded positively after missing the penalty but they were not able to breach Bombay Gymkhana’s defence. In the second half, Siddhant Pinto scored Gymkhana’s second to double the lead. But Salsette hit back through Amit Khanna’s fine goal just five minutes later. Gymkhana held their nerves and defended well to win a crucial game in the end.
