Thakur College reign supreme in RFYS zonals, Don Bosco qualify

Pune, Dec 9: Thakur College of Science and Commerce, Kandivali and Don Bosco High School, Matunga kept Mumbai’s flag flying as they qualified for the National Championship of the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports (RFYS) football tournament after a sterling display in the West Zone league.
Thakur College made Mumbai proud as they sealed the West Zone senior boys’ title after upstaging Hiramani School, Ahmedabad 1-0 in their last league match at the DSK Football Field, Pune. They finished with seven points, two wins and a draw, to top the standings in their category.
Prolific striker Mithilesh Kasare’s 33rd-minute goal gave them a slender lead which they held on to dear life to emerge triumphantly.
Don Bosco made the cut after a thumping 5-0 victory over Anand Niketan School, Ahmedabad in their last RFYS league match. The big victory not only improved their goal difference but also helped them finish with six points. Table toppers and title winners Our Lady of Rosary High School from Goa finished with an all-win record after defeating Loyola High School and Junior College, Pune 3-0 in their last league match.
Midfielders Dwayne Pereira (three goals) and Manan Dang (two goals) were the architects of Don Bosco’s victory, with four goals coming in the first half itself. Krishna Karkera was adjudged player of the match.
In the college boys category, Rizvi College of Arts, Science and Commerce’s hopes fell by the wayside after they suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat to Ahmedabad’s Shree MP Shah College of Commerce.
Father Agnel College of Commerce and Arts, Goa topped the college boys’ charts by winning all their three league matches. They signed off the league in style with a thumping 6-3 victory over Pune’s Spicer Adventist University.
Fr Agnel Multipurpose School and Junior College, Vashi too fared badly in the school girls’ category as they went down 2-0 to My Own High School, Ahmedabad in their last league match. My Own claimed the zonal honours, having won all their three matches.
Goa’s Rosary Higher Secondary School finished second with six points after routing Pune’s The Bishop’s School 9-0 in their last league match.
While Mumbai’s two teams qualified for the National Championship, Goa dominated the event with all four teams advancing to the next stage.
