Bengaluru FC reach Inter-Zone Finals of AFC Cup 2017

The Inter-Zone finals of AFC cup will witness the runner-ups of previous two AFC Cup Campaigns (2015 and 2016) face off against each other for a place in AFC Cup 2017 Final.
Last year’s AFC Cup runners-up JSW Bengaluru will now face Tajikistan’s FC Istiklol, a team that ended up as runners-up position a year earlier in 2015. In the AFC Inter-Zone Semi-Final, Bengaluru FC played out a goalless draw against 4.25 SC in the DPR Korea capital on Wednesday as they got through to the Inter Zonal Final, 3-0 on aggregate.
Blues coming from a comfortable 3-0 win in the first meeting at Kanteerava Stadium back in Bengaluru last month had a healthy aggregate lead thanks to goals from Sunil Chhetri, Udanta Singh and Lenny Rodrigues. In the second leg, neither side managed to break the deadlock as both teams drew a blank in front of goal.

Bengaluru FC defence was rock solid as they managed to keep tournament top scorer so far, Kim Yu-song at bay. With the onus on the DPR Korea club to attack, the closest they came was in the 75th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick. However the chance to reduce the deficit went waste though, as Bengaluru goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh guessed correctly to successfully preserve his clean sheet.
The result means Bengaluru will now travel to Tajikistan on September 27 to face host FC Istiklol in the decisive first leg of Inter-Zone Final, second leg will be held at Shree Kanteerava Stadium on October 18. FC Istiklol had earlier beaten Asean Zone winner Ceres-Negros 5-1 on aggregate to reach the Inter-zone finals.
The winner of Bengaluru vs Istiklol match will then face off against west zone finalist which will either be Syria’s Al Wahda or Air Force Club of Iraq for the 2017 AFC Cup final on November 4.
