Central Bank of India return to winning ways against struggling G.M. Sports

Central Bank of India produced a gritty performance to eake out a 2-0 win over Great Mother Sports Club in the Elite Division of the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) at Cooperage on Monday afternoon.

GMSC were desperate for a win after going four games without a win and came into the game on the back of two spankings at the hands of Air India and ONGC and faced a resurgent CBI side.

Having shipped in sixteen goals in their last two matches, GMSC held themselves well against CBI in the opening half an hour of the game, restricting CBI to very few chances.

There were encouraging signs as always for GMSC upfront, but they failed to make the most of the half chances that came their way in the first half.

However, GMSC were made to pay in the 40th minute, when their defender brought down the marauding CBI winger inside the box to hand the Bankers a penalty. Russell Galbano made no mistake is despatching the spot kick and handing CBI a half time advantage.

CBI almost doubled the lead early on in the second half, when a rebound from a cutback fell to Melwyn Vaz inside the box but the experienced forward failed to hit the target.

GMSC’s lack of confidence was evident in their play as CBI gained control in the second half and looked a lot more threatening against a jaded looking GMSC defence.

CBI eventually cashed in on their dominance as Melvyn Vaz capped off a brilliant CBI move with a tap in at the far post from Russell Galbano’s cross in the 78th minute.

The second goal knocked the stuffing out of the already struggling GMSC as CBI began to play with greater confidence in the final few minutes of the game.

However CBI failed to add to the lead, but gained the all important win which got them back to winning ways.

The win takes CBI second in the Elite Division table as their amazing story continued this season.
