National Football Returns to Cooperage as MYJ-GMSC Lead Mumbai’s Comeback in I-League 2

Mumbai is set to witness the return of national-level football after a two-year gap, as MYJ-GMSC prepares to host I-League 2 matches at the iconic Cooperage Stadium.

With official confirmation from the All India Football Federation, the I-League 2 season will kick off on 27th March 2026 and run until 15th May 2026. The competition will feature a single round-robin format with nine teams competing in an open pool.

The opening day will see two matches, including one hosted by MYJ-GMSC at Cooperage Stadium. They will face Sporting Club Bengaluru, the 2023–24 I-League 2 champions who were relegated from the I-League last season.

MYJ-GMSC is a relatively new club, formed after the merger of Mighty Young Joe FC and Goalorious Mothers SC ahead of the 2023–24 season. In their debut season, MYJ-GMSC made an immediate impact by winning the Mumbai Premier League title—going unbeaten throughout the campaign, a remarkable achievement for a newly formed side. That success secured their qualification for the 2023–24 I-League 3 season, where they finished third in the playoff round. Their strong performance ultimately earned them direct promotion to the I-League 2 for the 2025–26 season, marking a rapid and impressive rise through the national football pyramid.

To understand the significance of MYJ-GMSC hosting I-League 2 fixtures at Cooperage, it is important to look at Mumbai’s recent history in the national football landscape.

For nearly a decade (2007–2017), Mumbai FC served as the city’s most consistent representative at the national level. Competing in the I-League, they regularly hosted matches at Cooperage Stadium, making the venue a hub for top-tier domestic football. Their presence ensured that Mumbai remained firmly connected to India’s traditional football pyramid.

However, following their decline and eventual exit from the national scene, that continuity was broken. The city’s representation in the promotion-relegation structure became sporadic, and Cooperage gradually fell silent in terms of regular national-level fixtures. Meanwhile Mumbai City FC kept the footballing culture active in national circuit with consistent performance and championship title from 2014 until today.

In the years that followed after 2020’s, Kenkre FC emerged as a rare bright spot. Earning promotion to the I-League, they briefly carried Mumbai’s flag at the top tier. Yet, their stint was short-lived, highlighting the ongoing challenge of sustaining a stable presence at the national level.

Another notable effort came from Ambernath United Atlanta FC (2022-23), who came agonisingly close to securing I-League qualification. Despite narrowly missing out, they played a key role in keeping Mumbai relevant within the national pyramid with some strong performance and made a reputation of the giant in mumbai football, even hosting I-League 2 matches at Cooperage and briefly reviving the venue’s importance.

Their momentum carried forward when MH Oranje FC (2023-24) acquired the club’s slot to compete in I-League 2, continuing Mumbai’s intermittent presence in the national structure. Yet, consistency remained elusive, and once again, the city found itself without regular national-level football being hosted at its historic venues.

Now, after a year-long gap, that wait is finally over.

With MYJ-GMSC stepping into I-League 2 and bringing matches back to Cooperage, Mumbai is witnessing more than just the return of fixtures—it is seeing the revival of a pathway. This is not merely about one club’s participation; it represents the re-establishment of Mumbai within India’s competitive football pyramid.

MYJ-GMSC is not just another club—it is filling a structural void.

Mumbai boasts one of the most vibrant grassroots ecosystems in the country, largely driven by the well-organised leagues under the Mumbai Football Association. The city continues to produce a massive pool of footballing talent year after year. However, the lack of stable representation at the national level has long created a disconnect between grassroots development and elite competition.

By stepping into I-League 2 and hosting games locally, MYJ-GMSC is helping bridge that gap—offering players, fans, and the footballing community a tangible connection to the national stage once again.

As the new season kicks off, there is renewed optimism for the city’s footballing future. With Mumbai City FC continuing to represent Mumbai at the top level in the ISL, MYJ-GMSC now competing in I-League 2, and Mumbay FC set to feature in I-League 3 2025-26, the city is slowly rebuilding a multi-tier presence across Indian football.

For a city with such deep footballing roots, this is more than just progress—it is a long-awaited resurgence.
