Mumbay FC snatch stoppage-time draw in I-League 3 debut against TRAU FC
Mumbay FC marked their debut in the I-League 3 qualifiers with a dramatic 2-2 draw against TRAU FC, courtesy of a stoppage-time own goal, in a Group B clash on Tuesday.
Facing an experienced TRAU FC side on their home turf, Mumbay endured a challenging start as the hosts asserted early dominance. TRAU opened the scoring inside the first 10 minutes following a swift attacking move. Afridi Buyamayum surged down the flank and, drawing the goalkeeper out, squared the ball to Biplob Dey, who calmly tapped into an open net.
Trailing 0-1 at halftime, Mumbay FC returned with renewed intent after the break and found the equaliser in the 51st minute. Captain Bikramjit initiated the move with a precise low driven pass from defence to Number 9 Nandha Kumar near the centre circle. The striker combined neatly with Moirangthem Amarjit Singh, whose incisive through ball found Nandha again. The forward produced a composed first-time finish from 20+ yards, curling the ball into the bottom-right corner to level the score.
As the match approached its conclusion, TRAU appeared to have secured all three points. In the 89th minute, a defensive clearance by Flyod Dharmai fell kindly to Khunjamayum Raj Singh, whose effort was parried into the path of substitute Moirangthem Diya Singh. The latter made no mistake, slotting home to restore TRAU’s lead and spark celebrations among the home supporters.
However, the drama was far from over. Mumbay FC responded immediately in stoppage time, earning a corner in the 90+1 minute. Hafiz Pathan delivered a dangerous curling ball into the six-yard box, and in an attempt to clear, TRAU defender Shitaljit Atom misjudged his timing and turned the ball into his own net.
The late equaliser ensured Mumbay FC walked away with a valuable point from their first-ever national league fixture.
Mumbay FC will next face Zinc FA on April 30, with the latter coming into the fixture on the back of a 3-1 win over Samaleswari SC.
