India’s Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers campaign starts with goalless draw

India's Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers Campaign Starts with Goalless Draw

India’s quest for a spot in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 suffered a frustrating start as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Bangladesh in their opening Group C qualifier at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong.

The result leaves India needing to secure victories against Singapore and Hong Kong to progress from the four-team group, with both those teams also drawing 0-0 in their earlier match.

A packed JN Stadium, braving a rain-soaked pitch, witnessed a tense encounter where India struggled to convert their second-half dominance into goals. Head coach Manolo Márquez made five changes from the side that defeated Maldives, bringing in Boris Singh Thangjam, Udanta Singh Kumam, Lalengmawia Ralte, Sandesh Jhingan (who also captained the side), and Farukh Choudhary.

The first half was a nervy affair for the Blue Tigers, with Bangladesh creating several dangerous opportunities. Just seconds into the match, Vishal Kaith’s errant clearance gifted Md Mojibor Jony a chance, but his shot found the side netting. Bangladesh continued to press, with Md Shakil Topu and Md Shariar Emon threatening the Indian defense. A crucial goalline clearance from Subhasish Bose prevented an early Bangladesh lead after another Kaith error.

India gradually settled into the game, gaining control of midfield and creating their own chances. Liston Colaco tested Bangladesh goalkeeper Mitul Marma, and Farukh Choudhary missed a golden opportunity after Udanta Singh’s header down. Kaith redeemed himself with a vital save to deny Jony just before halftime.

The second half saw India assert their dominance, with Colaco creating several dangerous crosses. Sunil Chhetri, however, failed to capitalize on a well-measured cross in the 54th minute. A strong shoulder challenge from Bangladesh’s Hamza Choudhury, who proved to be a key figure for the visitors, denied Chhetri another chance moments later.

Despite sustained pressure and a vocal home crowd, India failed to break the deadlock, leaving them with a single point from their opening match. The Blue Tigers now face a crucial test against Singapore and Hong Kong, needing to find their scoring boots to keep their Asian Cup qualification hopes alive.
