In a high-drama semi-final at the Fatorda Stadium, East Bengal FC defeated Punjab FC 3-1 to secure their place in the final of the 2025-26 AIFF Super Cup. The Kolkata side delivered a composed and clinical performance, while Punjab’s campaign ends despite a strong run.

East Bengal opened the scoring early – in the 12th minute Mohamad Basim Rashid struck from the edge of the box after the visitors failed to clear a corner. Punjab responded soon after, earning a penalty after a handling foul in the box, which Daniel Ramirez converted coolly to level the score.

But East Bengal steadied themselves before the break. In first-half stoppage time, defender Kevin Sibille rose highest to head home from a set piece, restoring the lead heading into halftime.

The second half saw Punjab make attacking changes and push for an equaliser, but East Bengal managed to absorb the pressure. Their experience and composure paid off again in the 71st minute when captain Saul Crespo smashed home a left-footed strike after a clever build-up play – sealing the win and the final berth.

Punjab FC had the opportunity to test East Bengal’s defence, and their resilience earned them a place in club history as first-time semi-finalists. They began the tournament unbeaten and showed spirit under coach Panagiotis Dilmperis’s leadership, but in knockout football small margins proved decisive.

For East Bengal, this victory feels like vindication. Their group stage was marked by a blend of flair, tactical solidity and defensive balance – a foundation that held strong on the biggest night. As they prepare for the final, confidence is high and the fans’ hopes are renewed.

Punjab, despite exit, can take pride in a campaign that showed consistency, ambition and competitive spirit. For East Bengal, the next challenge awaits – a shot at silverware and continental qualification hang in the balance.
