AFC Champions League 2025: Al Nassr edge past FC Goa, but Brison Fernandes makes history

Under the bright lights of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Indian side FC Goa faced a huge challenge against Saudi powerhouse Al Nassr in a Group D clash of the AFC Champions League Two. Though the visitors secured a 2–1 victory, the match will forever be written in Indian football history thanks to a remarkable milestone achieved by young Brison Fernandes.

Al Nassr began the encounter with clear intent, asserting control from the outset and keeping Goa pinned deep inside their own half. Their dominance was rewarded early, as Angelo Gabriel broke the deadlock in the 10th minute with a composed finish. The Saudi side continued to dictate the pace and doubled their advantage seventeen minutes later when Haroune Camara capitalized on another flowing move to make it 2–0.

Despite trailing by two, FC Goa refused to fold. The home crowd roared back to life in the 31st minute when Brison Fernandes, last season’s ISL Emerging Player of the Year, struck a moment of brilliance to get one back for the Gaurs. With that goal, Fernandes became the first Indian footballer ever to score in the AFC Champions League Two, while also establishing FC Goa’s name as the first Indian club to find the net in the competition’s group stage.

Goa’s tactical approach with a compact 5-4-1 structure designed to absorb pressure and hit on the counter. In contrast, Al Nassr’s 3-5-2 setup offered midfield dominance and sustained attacking pressure. The statistics told the story of the contest: Al Nassr recorded 18 shots, four of which tested the goalkeeper, while Goa’s limited forward attacks produced just two attempts—the goal being their sole effort on target.

Though the Gaurs ultimately fell short, their spirited display and Brison’s record-breaking strike provided a silver lining in an otherwise challenging evening but FC Goa showed that they are not a team to backdown even against big clubs. FC Goa will now shift their focus to the return leg in Riyadh on November 5th, where they will look to build on this historic outing and seek redemption against the Saudi giants.
