HAL lose to Chanmari, MYJGMSC secure I League 3 Playoff spot
After MYJGMSC boosted their qualification chances with a dominant 5-1 win over RKM Football Academy, Chanmari FC’s 2-1 victory over HAL sealed the Mighty Lions’ playoff spot on goal difference.
MYJGMSC faced off against RKM Football Academy in a must win game and after a timid first half where they went down by a goal before recovering to a 1-1 score at the break, the mighty lions roared into form to score a 5-1 win
The Mumbai outfit started out well and almost got the opener in the first few minutes of the game. Skipper Kamlesh led from the front going ahead in attack on the wings to deliver teasing low box into the RKM box. Being heavily marked, Himanshu Patil made the run for it before flicking the ball towards the goal, however the ball rolled agonizingly wide of the net. As the game wore on, Tanmay operating on the right wing, delivered a pinpoint cross to the centre of the box where Abhijit Taware connected his shot well only for RKM keeper to pull off a save to keep the score 0-0.
After the early dominance it was however RKM that took the lead against the run of play, Shashikant Kumeti slotting it past Paramjeet to break the deadlock. The might lions fought back immediately with an attack into the RKM box after a misjudgement from RKM keeper, the ball fell for Shannon who did well to draw out the keeper before delivering the ball for Himanshu who did well to send into the net and draw level.
The first half ended at level peggings but it was in the second half the game turned on its head. Within minutes of restart, substitute Siddharth Nayak freekick into the box was met by Himanshu Patil who poked it past the keeper to put his side into the lead. Minute later, Siddharth delivered another pinpoint cross, this time from a corner kick to find Keegan at the far post. The latter making no mistake in heading home the third goal for his side.
RKM tried to pull things back but struggled to break open the lions defence again. In the 81st minute, Jay Bhavnani received a pass from Kamran outside the box with a man in front. Jay did well to sell a dummy and lose his marker before unleashing a fierce shot to find the top right corner and make it 4-1.
In the 89th minute, Dwight delivered a cross into the box that Himanshu took on his chest with his first touch before poking it past the keeper with his second touch to find the net and finish off a well-deserved hattrick. The match soon ended at 5-1 score line with the Mighty lions doing everything to improve the goal difference.
Later in the day, Chanmari defeated HAL 2-1 in a tense game to top group C and thereby knock out HAL which meant MYJGMSC go through to the playoff round. The late evening fog had halted play for sometime in the first half. Once it resumed two goals on either side of the half for Chanmari FC meant the host go through to playoff round with a all win record.
Vincent and Dawngtea scored the two goals for the Manipuri outfit. At the other end HAL struggled to control the game and only managed to create few close chances later in the game. They were rewarded with a goal in the 89th minute courtesy of Ajith R but equalizer eluded the Bengaluru outfit, knocking them out of the competition.
