FC Goa triumph over Rangdajied United FC 4-3 in thrilling Durand Cup opener

FC Goa kicked off their Durand Cup 2024 campaign with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Rangdajied United FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on Monday. The match showcased an exhilarating display of football, keeping fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

The game started with Rangdajied United taking an early lead in the 19th minute, thanks to a goal from Owanijuh Pajuh. Despite FC Goa’s efforts to equalize, they went into halftime trailing 0-1.

The second half saw a revitalized FC Goa, with captain Leander D’Cunha scoring the equalizer in the 48th minute. The momentum shifted in favor of the Gaurs as Devendra Murgaokar put them ahead with a well-placed goal in the 58th minute. However, Rangdajied United quickly responded, with Pynbhalang Suting bringing the score to 2-2.

In the 80th minute, FC Goa regained the lead when Lalthangliana successfully converted a penalty. Yet, the drama continued as Apborlang Kurbah equalized for Rangdajied United five minutes later, setting up a nail-biting finish.

In the dying moments of the game, Vellington Fernandes emerged as the hero for FC Goa, scoring in the 7th minute of added time to seal a memorable 4-3 victory for the Gaurs.

Head Coach Israil Gurung and his team will now aim to carry this momentum into their next Durand Cup fixture on Thursday, where they will face Tribhuwan Army FC from Nepal.
