Parel’s Pride: Soccer Saga FC’s inspiring climb in Mumbai’s Football Hierarchy
In the bustling heart of Parel, Mumbai, a footballing revolution quietly took root in 2016 when Soccer Saga FC was born. What started as a humble initiative aimed at nurturing local talent quickly evolved into a powerhouse, reshaping the narrative for players who had grown weary of trials with other clubs.
Krupesh Sherwade, one of the founders, reflects on the journey, “Local players were tired of giving trials for other clubs, so myself, Chaitanya and rest of our management took this initiative, and many helping hands came towards the team to achieve what we are today.”
The club’s journey is a testament to resilience and passion. Starting in the MFA 3rd Division, the fifth tier of Mumbai Football, Soccer Saga FC faced an uphill battle. However, they navigated through challenges, securing back-to-back promotions until they found themselves in the Super Division – 2nd Tier Mumbai Football. The dream of playing in the MFA Elite Division (Now Mumbai Premier League), a dream cherished since the club’s inception, is now within reach of the club.
The club’s success is not merely a product of on-field prowess but a result of a collective effort. Krupesh acknowledges, “Our head coach Fransisco Salian, who has been with us since the 2022-23 season, played a crucial role. Our first plan was to avoid relegation, and with gradual progress, we cleared that hurdle as a team.”
Soccer Saga FC’s management, including Yogesh, Tariq, Kiran, and Chaitanya, played vital roles in the club’s journey. Additionally, the backbone of the team, goalkeeper Trinal, has been instrumental in fostering a friendly environment and motivating the players.
Entering the Mumbai Super League this season marked a new chapter for Soccer Saga FC. Krupesh shares his expectations, “We aim to finish in the top 2 and qualify for the playoff now.” As of now, Soccer Saga FC stands at the crossroads of its campaign in the Mumbai Super League Group A, having played six games, won three, drawn one, accumulating a total of 10 points, and securing the 5th position in the league table. With 5 games to go and just 6 points behind the league leaders with a game in hand, top 2 is still up for grabs for Soccer Saga.
The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Maintaining a positive atmosphere, especially when results don’t go their way, is a formidable task. Krupesh notes, “We aim to create a good atmosphere within our team. It’s important that young players have positive attitude when results don’t go their way. We have a couple of tough games remaining for the season, so we’re looking forward to preparing for that now.”
Beyond the exhilarating matches on the pitch, Soccer Saga FC contributes to football’s grassroots. Founded in 2016, the club’s academy caters to young talents aged 5 to 18, nurturing the next generation of football stars.
As Soccer Saga FC continues to make waves in the Mumbai Super League, their journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of football, uniting a community and inspiring dreams from the streets of Matunga to the grand stage of Mumbai football.
