Second-half strikes from Ibson Melo, Romain Philippoteaux, and Parthib Gogoi propelled the Highlanders into the next stage of the tournament, making them the second team to progress from Group D.

Juan Pedro Benali, the NorthEast United coach, made strategic changes to his lineup, introducing Ibson Melo and Nestor Albiach as starters, with Romain Philippoteaux leading the team as captain. Despite these adjustments, the hosts struggled to find their rhythm in the beginning, conceding an opportunistic goal by Parvaj Bhuiya in the early minutes.

During the first half, NorthEast United FC found it challenging to create substantial goal-scoring opportunities, trailing 1-0 by halftime. However, Benali’s halftime changes proved pivotal as Parthib Gogoi, Phalguni Singh, and Dinesh Singh were introduced.

The tide of the game shifted dramatically within the opening seven minutes of the second half. Ibson Melo netted an equalizer from close range in the 48th minute, quickly followed by Romain Philippoteaux’s dazzling display as he danced his way into the box and hammered the ball into the bottom corner, giving the Highlanders the lead.

Throughout the second half, NorthEast United FC maintained their dominance, and their victory was solidified when Parthib Gogoi emulated Romain’s success in the 78th minute. Displaying exceptional composure, Gogoi found the back of the net, securing his fourth tournament goal.

With this impressive win, NorthEast United FC accumulated seven points from their three group stage matches, solidifying their place in the quarter-finals as one of the two best second-placed teams.

Stay tuned as the Durand Cup action continues to unfold, showcasing the remarkable talents and fierce competition of football’s elite.
