Durand Cup Bengaluru FC beat Gokulam Kerala 2-0 to end campaign on high
Bengaluru FC concluded their journey in the Durand Cup 2023 group stage with a standout performance, claiming a convincing 2-0 victory over Gokulam Kerala FC at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Tuesday.
In the second half, Bengaluru FC found the back of the net twice through strikes from Robin Yadav (57′) and Lalpekhlua (89′). Despite this commendable win, Bengaluru FC’s efforts in the group stage fell short of earning them a spot in the quarterfinals. They secured five points from three matches in Group C but did not manage to progress further.
The initial half of the match saw a cautious exchange between Bengaluru FC and Gokulam Kerala FC, with few notable scoring opportunities. Gokulam Kerala FC’s midfielder Akhil Praveen came closest to breaking the deadlock during the 26th minute, but his header sailed over the crossbar.
As the second half commenced, Gokulam Kerala FC came out with renewed determination, but it was Bengaluru FC who managed to seize the initiative through a well-executed set piece. Robin Yadav took charge of a free-kick and delivered a precision shot that struck the underside of the crossbar before finding the back of the net, granting Bengaluru FC a vital advantage.
Unfazed by their lead, Bengaluru FC maintained their offensive efforts. Their persistence paid off in the closing moments of the game when substitute Lalpekhlua capitalized on a well-timed pass from Monirul Molla. With precision, Lalpekhlua slotted the ball into the net from close range, extending Bengaluru FC’s lead to 2-0.
Although Bengaluru FC’s group stage campaign did not secure them a place in the quarterfinals, their victory over Gokulam Kerala FC underscores their competitive spirit and commitment in the Durand Cup. As they bid farewell to the group stage, Bengaluru FC’s performance leaves an impression of their potential in future tournaments and their continuous pursuit of excellence.
