WIFA to recommence the WIFA Women’s Football League

The Western Indian Football Association (WIFA) plans to continue with the remaining WIFA Women’s Football League/IWL qualifiers from February 1.

The league has been put on hold from 10 January 2022 following the revised COVID-19 guidelines of the Government of Maharashtra. The state government had advised suspension of all sports events except national and international level events.

Mumbai’s PIFA Sports are yet to lose a game and are comfortably sitting at the top of the table. Thane’s S.P Football Academy and Pune-based Krida Prabhodhini have 12 points each, but the former is in the second spot with a better goal difference. Mumbai’s Footie First and Kenkre FC are at the fourth and fifth positions respectively. At the bottom half of the table, Pacangan FC is ranked 8th while Pune’s Snigmay FC is ranked 9th. Palghar-based Next Sports Academy is at the bottom of the table without registering a single win in the campaign so far.

On 25 January 2022, the WIFA issued revised fixtures for the remainder of the WIFA Women’s Football League. A total of 18 matches are left in the completion of the league. These matches will conclude over the course of 9 days with 4 non-match days.

Maharashtra is currently hosting the Women’s Asia Cup at three venues in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Pune. Despite taking necessary precautions and following protocols, several members of the teams participating in the tournament have tested positive for COVID-19. Corona has also forced India to pull out of the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup after having failed to field a minimum 13 player squad against Chinese Taipei on 23 January.

While the covid situation in Maharashtra looks under control as of now, one can hope WIFA will be smart enough to learn from the AFC’s mistake, take necessary precautions, and follow the COVID-related norms as they plan to restart the remainder of the league.

One thing is for sure, WIFA and the participating teams have to be more careful as they look forward to finishing the league within the next 9 days.
