FC Goa vs ATK Mohun Bagan – 3 Key Battles to watch out for

FC Goa are all set to take on ATK Mohun Bagan in the battle of the 2nd spot in the ISL standings. We take a look at three key battles that will have a key role in shaping the final result of the match.

The Gaurs come into the clash on the back of a thumping 3-0 win over Jamshedpur FC. Jorge Ortiz Mendoza and Ivan Gonzalez were on target as FC Goa outplayed the Red Miners at the Fatorda Stadium. The former scored two goals in either half as he continues to be a critical part of the FC Goa setup this weekend. Meanwhile, ATK Mohun Bagan are on the back of a 0-1 loss to League leaders Mumbai City FC and would look to turn things around.

We take a look at three key battles that will have a key role in shaping the final result of the match.

  1. Igor Angulo vs ATK Central Defenders

FC Goa’ striker Igor Angulo has been the most in-form attackers in the league with nine goals in the competition. The Spaniard’s clinical finishing and movement has helped the Gaurs get crucial goals. Along with a solid supporting cast behind him, the head coach Juan Ferrando will back his striker to continue to hit the net going ahead.

He will be up against a stellar ATKMB defensive unit comprising of Tiri and Sandesh Jhingan who have been quite miserly when it comes to goals. ATKMB keeper Arindam Bhattacharya has conceded just four goals in the competition. With 7 clean sheets in 10 games, ATK Mohun Bagan will be a tough nut to crack for Igor Angulo.

  1. Ivan Gonzalez vs Roy Krishna

FC Goa’s central defender Ivan Gonzalez will be up against one of the most lethal strikers in the league, Roy Krishna.  Gonzalez has formed a stealthy partnership alongside fellow overseas signing James Donachie for the FC Goa side. However, Roy Krishna’s ability to find key goals for his side is a threat that the Spanish defender will have to be wary of going into the clash. The Mariner striker holds the key for his side having scored 60% of his team’s goal.

  1. Brandon Fernandes vs Edu Garcia

The two central midfielders – Brandon Fernandes and Edu Garcia are key players for their respective sides. Both of them are highly creative midfielders responsible for finding the right passes for their attackers up ahead.

With their attacking mentality, FC Goa will rely on Brandon Fernandes to create chances for Igor Angulo to finish off. In a similar manner, Edu Garcia will have the task of finding Roy Krishna in the ATKMB attack for the goals.

The stage is set for an intriguing battle between two of the best teams in the entire league and the fans can expect a high-scoring thriller when they clash.
