Khelo India: Maharashtra lose against Assam in Semi-final

A memorable journey for the young footballers from Maharashtra concludes as the boys faced defeat after putting up a great fight against Assam in the Semi-finals of the Khelo India Youth Games 2020, Guwahati.

The Maharashtra team initially succumbed to the pressure imposed by the opposition. Within 10 minutes, the boys failed to maintain the rhythm and were found making errors in their defensive third. Failing to keep the shape, Assam opened the netting at the 32nd minute. Following the solitary goal lead at the first half, Maharashtra eventually conceded twice to go down by a 3-0 margin. However, Mr Paresh Shivalkar, the Team Manager of Maharashtra praised the boys. “It is never easy to play 4 matches in 8 days. I am proud of my team and they have shown good team unity and character to reach the semifinals.”

Mr Shivalkar further emphasized on how professional tournaments like the Khelo India is creating a sporting ecosystem in the country. “I could see my boys gaining valuable exposure in a professional environment. Also, I was overwhelmed to see so many scouts present to spot young talents.” he said.

“It was a good experience altogether in Khelo India. It is an exciting initiative by the Government of India to find the talent from every nooks and corner of the country. Overall, this is a well-organised event. With companies like Star Sports, DNA Networks covering the matches, we’re exposed to a new experience. The budding athletes need to be a part of a sporting environment such as Khelo India, where more than 3000 athletes are indulging into as many as 20 sports. It just encourages you to do better, no matter whether you win or lose”

Maharashtra will play their third-place match against Goa on 22nd of January, 2020!
