Super Eight: CBI blanks GM while Customs overcame KSA

13th April 2019, Mumbai: In the first two games of the MDFA Elite Division Super Eight Stage, the likes of GMSC, Central Bank of India (CBI), KSA, and Mumbai Customs played their first game at the Neville D’Souza Turf (Bandra).
CBI displayed a gritty performance to derail GMSC 2-0 while Customs got the better of KSA 3-1 in an entertaining game. With a total of four places up for grabs for the Elite Division semi-finals, the race for the prestigious Elite Division title is on.
Here is the summary of the first two Super Eight games:
GMSC had a terrific league campaign this season where they finished fourth in the Private League. On the other hand, CBI also finished fourth in the Corporate Group. Both the sides met recently where CBI’s patience and resilience paid off in a 2-0 win. CBI’s Rithick Mukherjee and Goalkeeper Ummaid Nut had an outstanding outing where the duo kept GM’s attack at bay.
After a neck-to-neck first-half, the deadlock was broken in the early stages of the second-half. Nimesh Shetty showed great awareness around the attacking third to give CBI a crucial lead with a sublime finish. Rather than sitting back and soaking the pressure, CBI pushed forward and scored the second goal as well, this time through Yogesh Kadam to seal the game.
In the other game, Mumbai Customs locked horns against an in-form KSA side on Saturday evening. KSA who went unbeaten throughout the league in Private Group suffered their first defeat of the season after losing 3-1 against Customs. Customs, right from the kick-off, were dominant and took the lead in the 10th minute through Dhawal Waghela. Gabriel Rosenburg a wonderful cross which was headed home by Dhawal.
Seven minutes later, Sajjad Alam doubled the lead with a fine header after Praneel Mendon’s precise corner.
KSA did get several chances through Sunny Thakur. But the attacker failed to convert those chances into the goal which turned fatal. In the second-half, Dhaval scored his second and Customs’ third goal with a cheeky back-heel to seal the game and kick-start the Super Eight campaign on a winning note. For KSA, Johnson converted from the spot but it hardly affected the match outcome.
