Super Division: Ansari and lady luck help Mumbai Port win against Atlanta

Mumbai, February 15, 2019: Mumbai Port Trust needed Atif Ansari’s first half strike and an own goal to clinch a 2-1 win against Atlanta at the Xaviers Ground on Friday.

The first half was a close affair as both teams slugged it out for the opening goal. Ansari hit a curler over the bar in the 22nd minute. He scored the first goal with a lob over the goalkeeper in the 24th minute.

Mumbai Port had man-marked Atlanta danger-man Royston Veigas. Alex Fernandes glanced a header wide in the 32nd minute as Atlanta pressed forward for an equalizer.

The first half was 1-0 to Mumbai Port. Atlanta went all out in the second half and made numerous forays in the opposition territory. Ankit Dalvi missed a good chance to make it 1-1 as his shot went over the bar.

Veigas smashed in a superb left footed free-kick in the 57th minute and leveled things up for Atlanta. A classic goal!

He almost grabbed a winner in the 75th minute only to have his shot parried away by the goalkeeper. Rajesh Goswami’s shot took a deflection off Alex Fernandes and went in in the 70th minute. An own goal and 2-1 to Mumbai Port!

Veigas almost made it 2-2 in the dying moments as his effort went inches wide off the left post.

Mumbai Port held on to win. Atlanta fought bravely and can be proud of their effort.

In the first game, Intelenet and ICL Payyade played out a 1-1 draw. Asadul Khan’s 57th-minute goal canceled out Navin Koli’s 21st-minute strike for Intelenet. It was a just result for both teams in the end.
