Gujarat overcome Lakshadweep challenge, Services down Daman
Services down a spirited Daman & Diu side by a 2-0 margin while in another game, Gujarat came from a goal down to beat Lakshadweep 3-1.
In the morning encounter, tournament favourites Services faced off against a rejuvenated Daman and Diu. Services dominated the game for most part of the first half but failed to break down a resolute defence from Daman. In the second half, Services continued to push men forward in search of goals. Around the 72nd mark Services were finally rewarded when substitute Shreyas VG’s header off a corner found the back of the net.
The one goal lead got doubled in the very next minute after an unfortunate own goal by Daman defender Pawan. Services managed to hold onto the lead till the final whistle as the game ended in a 2-0 scoreline to go on top of the group A table with 6 points from 2 matches.
In the second fixture of the day, Gujarat overcame a goal deficit to beat Lakshadweep 3-1. Around the 18th minute mark, Lakshadweep took the lead through a goal from midfielder Abdul Ameen. Gujarat came back strong in response with flurry of attacks and were soon rewarded with a penalty when Gujarat striker Jignesh in one on one situation was fouled. Lakshadweep goalkeeper Mohammed Mubarak came out with rash tackle earning himself a red card in the process. Skipper Pawan made no mistake in converting the penalty.
Reduced to ten men, Lakshadweep struggled to hold off Gujarat who beame relentless in pursuit of goal with a man advantage. Nine minutes after the first goal, Gujarat took the lead through a clinical finish from Ayaan Sheikh. Lakshadweep tried to come back in the second half but failed to break Gujarat defence. Ayaan doubled the lead in the injury time to put the game to bed.
