Portugal and Spain will rekindle their fierce rivalry when they face-off in their first group match

A long wait was finally over when the ball started to roll in Russia yesterday. It has started, the FIFA World Cup has. The footballing world will now breathe, talk and debate football at least until July 15.

Blockbuster clashes are usually common during the knock-out stages, but it has come early in this World Cup. European Champions Portugal will face-off against former World Champions Spain on tonight’s much-awaited clash, with the winner likely to top their group.

Spanish FA announced sacking Lopetegui just two days before their World Cup opener. It is to be seen how the La Rojas would respond to it. Portugal are among the frontrunners to clinch the trophy and the team is free from any injuries.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at 3 key battles that will decide the winner

#3 Pepe vs Diego Costa

Diego Costa is likely to start against Portugal in the crucial encounter. On the other side of this battle, a known, old-foe will be awaiting him in the form of Pepe.

Pepe and Diego Costa were fierce rivals when they were at Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid respectively. Pepe plies his trade for a Turkish outfit, and he is already 35, but that doesn’t he has still lost his never-say-die attitude.

Spain have much pressure on their side, after sacking Lopetegui. Hierro will likely employ Costa to exploit Portugal’s defensive frailties. The winner of the duel will have a larger impact on tonight’s result.
