Vijith Shetty leads Air India to glory against Customs

31st December 2017, Mumbai: Vijith Shetty’s second-half strike helped Air India to increase their winning run to five games when the defending champions defeated Mumbai Customs 1-0 in the MDFA Elite Division encounter at Mumbai Football Arena, Andheri, earlier today.
Air India came into the match on the back of a comprehensive 3-0 victory against Union Bank of India (UBI) while Customs defeated Mumbai Strikers 4-1, courtesy of Francisco Salin’s wonderful hat-trick. The holders comfortably continued their dominant run by edging out Customs who has been also playing terrific football this season.
The first-half was all about being wasteful in front of the goal. Both the sides had numerous chances to open the scoring but their poor finishing let them down as the first forty-five minutes ended goallessly. Pratik Koli, Aaron D’Costa, and Rinaldo Fernandes combined quite well but the lack of killer instinct was quite evident today.
Meanwhile, Ashrafali Makandar, John Coutinho and Francisco Salin struggled to threaten Air India’s backline of Santosh Koli, Tejas Raut and Pramod Pandey. Both the outfits were equally good in the first-half which made the match more intriguing and exciting. In the second-half, there were less clear-cut chances but Air India stepped up when it mattered.
In the 58th minute, Air India’s Captain Vijith Shetty’s free-kick somehow managed to sneak past Customs’ backline and goalkeeper Liyaz Kaya which broke the deadlock and proved to be a winning goal. Customs’ resilience was deceived by Air India’s high pressure. Nevertheless, nothing should be taken away by Customs who gave a good fight to a side who has been unstoppable this season.
