‘Incredible’ Air India crowned MDFA Elite Division Champions 2016-17

Mumbai: Air India and ONGC played out a 1-1 draw in their Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA), Elite Division match held at Cooperage ground, on 28th April 2017. i.e Friday evening.

The MDFA Elite Division 2016-17 ended today with Air India being crowned the Champions despite a nervy 1-1 draw. Needing only a point from this match, Air India played cautiously throughout the match with no vulnerability at the back. ONGC meanwhile were on the attack from the very first minute. The first half was a bit of a dull affair as reported by our sources.

The match came to life in the second half when Air India was awarded a penalty. Vijith Shetty calmly converted the spot kick as Air India now took a priceless 1-0 lead. Needing just one point to win the Championship, they were now on course for all three points and had one hand on the trophy. ONGC felt the urgency to now go all out in the attack. Air India made two substitutions and Pratik Koli’s introduction once again started the fluency in Air India attack. Aaron D’Costa was instrumental in the match and so was Vijith Shetty responsible for the lead.

ONGC won a penalty in the 65th minute and Nitesh Munde made no mistake from the spot. The match was level at 1-1 and at this point looked like it would be anyone’s match. The sustained pressure from ONGC was soaked in by the Air India team. In the end, Air India held their nerves to hold on to a 1-1 draw and thus became CHAMPIONS!

It has been a long Elite Division season, Congratulations to the entire staff and players from Air India who were absolutely magnificent this season. For the ONGC side, the efforts are there to be seen and there will always be the next season to better this season’s results.
