Saalim Shaikh’s solitalry goal takes Atlanta FC to 3rd place spot

A goal in the 2nd half by Saalim Shaikh earned Atlanta 3rd place glory as they defated Somaiya Vidyavihar 1-0 in the 2nd Division match of MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) on 25th April, 2015.

Somaiya VV and Atlanta FC both faced their share of hardships and got defeated in their semifinals against Veniza Virar SC and Century Rayon respectively. While Somaiya VV got defeated at the hands of Veniza Virar after a exciting penalty shootout. On the other hand Atlanta lost to Century Rayon after giving a tough fight.

Neither teams were able to score in the passionate first half and it even seemed like the 2nd half would end goalless.Soon Somaiya Vidyavihar started to attack in the start of second half.

But quickly they lost momentum and Atlanta FC got a chance to counter attack. They were successful in doing so in the 48th minute. Saalim Shaikh of Atlanta netted the opening goal as he tapped the ball in after a crucial pass from Allen Contractor and Atlanta FC were in the 1-0 lead.

The match became more interesting thereafter as Somaiya VV desperately tried to get back in the game. Siddesh Bhagwat did have a chance to score the equalizer when he took the freekick 2 minutes later which breezed past the crossbar.

Cutodian of Somaiya, Omkar Kulkarni frequently came out of his box to support his defenders who were having trouble to counter the tall Atlanta strikers. As the final whistle blew, Atlanta were able to hold on to their lead and defeated Somaiya Vidyavihar 1-0.

But Somaiya Vidyavihar had a reason to rejoice as they will be playing the 1st Division next season along with St Joseph’s SC, Bad Boys SC, Das F.A. , Century Rayon, Atlanta FC, Veniza Virar and Friends United.
