Over 40 girls get Colaba shining as Hiraai Suns clinch the Women’s Colaba Super League

Hiraai Suns Women’s team clinched the first Colaba Super League title after a drenching day’s play at the Back Garden’s Ground in Colaba on Saturday, 9th May, 2015.

Hiraai Suns ‘ success was down to a staunch and resolute defence which wasn’t breached at all in the entire competition as they recorded five straight clean sheets in their march to glory.

Laura Estibeiro led the way for Hiraai Suns in the attacking department as she net four times propelling Hiraai Suns to becoming the first ever Colaba Super League Women’s Champions.

The final against Yash Warriors was a tight affair which was settled by two own goals but Laura Estibeiro had major part to play in both of them.

Hiraai Suns edged out Golden Tigers in the semi-finals after blanking Kalakaar Indians 2-0 in their opening group stage fixture.before two goalless draws against Konaark Realtors and Yash Warriors got them in the last four.

Colaba set the stage on fire when a day long footballing party, was lit up by some dazzling football by the best women footballers in the city. The girls portrayed extreme passion as they battled the gruelling schedule and the heat in a bid to bring glory to their team.

It was non-stop action right from the start as the cramped up schedule meant there was no room for a half time break in most of the first round matches but the footballers on show, showed little signs of tiring with an internal zeal in addition to the amazing support by onlookers and organizers alike.

Krishna Pawle who has been the whole and soul of the event, was taking special interest in proceedings as always and his excitement and encouragement was lovely to watch not just for the neutrals but also for those taking part.

The Colaba Super League will be selecting eleven players from those on show today to forge a team which will represent the league in competitions outdoor.

The CSL has definitely laid down a marker when it comes to promoting Women’s Football in the city and has given the young female footballers of the city a platform to showcase their skills which was rarely replicated any hwere else.

Although women’s football in the city has a long way to go, CSL did throw up some real talent in the shape of Niketa Rathod who was instrumental in Naaz United’s run to the semi-finals while continuing to provide platform for seasoned campaigners like Laura Estibeiro.
