Mumbai Football Season’s Curtain Raiser, The Independence Cup to kick off today

Its that time of the year again when the practitioners of the beautiful game in the city return to action. The opening of the season is marked by the Independence Cup which features sixteen top division teams which battle it out for the first piece of silverware on offer in the season.

The Community Shield of Mumbai Football, the Independence Cup will take place at St.Xavier’s ground in Parel on 14th and 15th August 2015.

Ten Elite Division teams which includes Champions Air India will set the Parel ground on fire in the tournament which is always played with great passion as teams look to lay down a marker for the rest of the seasons.

The magic of the knockout football makes this tournament a special one and every year witnesses a number of upsets and few surprise packages. Mumbai Warriors, HDFC, Income Tax are some of the lower division teams which the elite teams must be vary of as they are more than capable of pulling out an upset early on in the tournament.

KSA’s clash with UBI is the pick of the first round clashes as a UBI employee will try to plot his employer’s downfall as a coach of their opponents on the day in KSA. Another all-Elite Division clash sees Great Mother FC take on Central Railways. The duo played out a cracking game in the Elite Division last season, when a breathtaking hat-trick from Karim Shaikh helped Central Railways come out on top.

ICL’s clash with Kenkre FC will see plenty of young guns on the field with either teams boasting an array of young talent, some of which is certain to light up the stage.

With so many mouth watering clashes on the menu, the season’s curtain raiser is only a sign of things to come. Season 2015/16 promises to be more exciting and hope that’s true come tomorrow.
