Falcons, Bandra Packers win men, women’s crowns

The women winners, Bandra Packers

Mumbai: Falcon Brothers, Mazagon and Bandra Packers emerged triumphant claiming the men and women’s crowns respectively in the Bandra Gymkhana open floodlit rink football tournament, played at the DPRC ground, Bandra.

In the final of the men’s competition, Falcon Brothers fought hard to overcome Joga Bonitto 4-2 to win the coveted title. Rohan Thomas, who has been scoring goals regularly, was again the star as he slotted home two goals and the other two goals were scored by Wayne Oliver and Lloyd Vaz. Bonitto managed to score two goals through Sunny D’Souza and Joshua Fernandes. Later, Rohan Thomas was declared the ‘Player of the final’.

In the women’s final action, Bandra Packers and Bombastic Rockies were engaged in a fierce battle and there was not much to separate between the two sides. However, Bandra Packers managed to strike the target twice with Valencia Mascarenhas and Laura Estibeiro scoring one each. Lian Mathews scored the lone goal for Bombastic Rockies. Tracy Gonsalves of Bombastic Rockies won the ‘Player of the final’ award.

The Bandra Gymkhana organising committee observed a minute of silence as a mark of respect in the memory of late Xavier Almedia, who had regularly commentated on the matches during the tournament in the past.

Results (all Finals) – Women:  Bandra Packers 2 (Valencia Mascarenhas, Laura Estibeiro) bt Bombastic Rockies 1 (Lian Mathews). Player of the final: Tracy Gonsalves (Bombastic Rockies).
