Roaring Start: Mumbai City FC Triumphs 3-1 in Durand Cup Opener

Mumbai City FC began their 2023 Durand Cup campaign on a high note, securing a well-deserved 3-1 win against Mohammedan SC in an action-packed encounter.
The action started early with the Islanders taking charge quickly. In the 2nd minute, Diaz unleashed a strike, but it narrowly missed the target, followed by Bipin’s attempt that grazed the side netting.
In the 12th minute, Mumbai City FC took the lead as Rostyn rose above the defense to nod in a perfectly delivered curling cross from Greg. The towering header found the back of the net, giving Mumbai City FC an early advantage.
As the first half progressed, Mumbai City FC continued asserting dominance. Noguera’s efforts inside the box led to Diaz tapping in a saved attempt, doubling the lead in the 23rd minute. The birthday boy made his mark on the scoresheet, delighting fans.
Chhangte extended the lead further in the 35th minute, capitalizing on a well-timed delivery from Bipin with an equally well-timed slide to knock the ball into the net.
At the other end, Mohammedan SC pulled one back just before half-time, with David Lalhlansanga nodding in a cross to make it 3-1.
The second half saw Mumbai City FC maintaining control of the game, creating multiple opportunities. Bipin came close to scoring again, striking the crossbar from close range, while Yoell’s corner found Rahul Bheke’s head but missed the target.
In the dying minutes, Gurkirat’s attempt was thwarted by the Mohammedan SC goalkeeper, preserving the scoreline. The final whistle blew with Mumbai City FC emerging triumphant with a 3-1 victory.
Mumbai City FC’s impressive display and clinical finishing set a positive tone for their Durand Cup journey, while Mohammedan SC showcased resilience despite the defeat.
