Mumbai eves emerge victorious in State Women Football after trouncing Gondia

Mumbai women’s Football team crowned champion at The Maharashtra Inter District Football Championship (Women) Open at Jalgaon.

The young women’s team from Mumbai was crowned champion at The Maharashtra Inter District Football Championship (Women) Open at Jalgaon yesterday.

The team from the city played out the final against Gondia in an afternoon game of 3 pm yesterday. It was an encounter wherein the defending champions Mumbai were pitted against the dark horses Gondia.

Both the teams were coming into the finals on the back of comprehensive wins from the semis. While Mumbai defeated Poona 2-0 earlier on, Gondia knocked out their neighbors Nagpur 7-6 in a tie breaker.

Mumbai took a solitary goal lead which remained the only one of the match, all thanks to Snehal Manchkar who scored an ultimate poacher’s goal true to the reputation of one!

After conceding this strike the Gondia team pressed hard all through out to get back on neutral ground with an equalizer but it was not to be as the Mumbai team hung on to defend the lead all the way through.

A hard fought, exciting and entertaining match came to a close with eventually the result being in the favour of the ladies from the Big City. They had managed to secure the title that they had earned last year and this was their third successive final on row. The elated team was felicitated and later on even posed for photographs decked in their medals with Souter Vaz, Hon. Secretary WIFA and Henry Menezez, CEO WIFA.

The competition was where teams from 16 different districts were in the fray and 300+ participants chosen from various football clubs in their respective district associations were involved. WIFA’s aim behind this is to scout talent for the State Team to play in the national tournaments.
