Kolhapur, Pune set for repeat showdown in Maharashtra Inter-District 2026

The Maharashtra State (WIFA) Inter-District Football Championship for Senior Men 2025-26 (Tier 1) is set for a fitting finale as Kolhapur and Pune prepare to lock horns once again, this time with the title on the line at the iconic Chhatrapati Shahu Stadium.

What began as a structured state competition across two tiers has now boiled down to a familiar yet high-stakes rematch, with both sides earning their place in the final after contrasting but equally compelling campaigns.

The Tier 1 format, which features eight teams split into two groups, gives seeded districts direct entry based on previous performances, while Tier 2 serves as the qualification pathway for emerging districts across Maharashtra.

Kolhapur, Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur entered Tier 1 as seeded sides, with Gadchiroli and Palghar joining Group A from Tier 2, and Thane and Wardha completing Group B.

After three intense matchdays, the stage has been set for the grand finale — Kolhapur vs Pune in the final.

Kolhapur’s campaign began in explosive fashion, registering a staggering 21-0 win over Gadchiroli, instantly stamping their authority on the tournament. Pune, on the other hand, had a slower start, opening with a draw against Palghar, but steadily built momentum as the group stage progressed.

Interestingly, both finalists also met in the group stage, where they played out a stalemate — a result that reflected the growing balance between two of Maharashtra’s strongest district sides. While Kolhapur had already secured qualification, Pune needed at least a draw in that fixture to progress, which they managed, showing resilience under pressure.

Group B saw Mumbai and Nagpur dominate proceedings with consistent performances, eventually setting up a high-profile clash on the final group matchday, which also ended in a draw as both teams advanced.

The knockout rounds only added more weight to the final narrative. Kolhapur, last season’s champions, comfortably overcame Nagpur 3-1 in the semi-final, continuing their strong record in the competition. The second semi-final, however, produced drama, as Pune avenged last season’s third-place disappointment by defeating Mumbai in a tense penalty shootout to book their spot in the final.

Now, the stage is set once again at Chhatrapati Shahu Stadium — a venue fitting for a contest that has steadily grown into one of the most anticipated fixtures in Maharashtra’s domestic football calendar.

The third-place match between Nagpur and Mumbai will kick off at 2:00 pm, followed by the final at the same venue.

The question now is simple: can Kolhapur defend their crown, or will Pune finally flip the script and lift the title?
