India Put Up a Fight as Brazil Triumph in Historic Kolkata Clash
India’s historic first senior men’s international meeting with Brazil ended in a 4-0 defeat for the Blue Tigers, as the five-time world champions showcased their quality at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata. Despite a spirited opening from India, Brazil gradually took control and produced a clinical second-half performance to seal a comfortable victory.
India started with confidence and managed to frustrate Brazil during the opening stages. However, Brazil eventually broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when Estêvão cut inside from the right and produced a composed left-footed finish to put the visitors ahead.
Brazil doubled their advantage just before half-time. Estêvão picked out Pedro with a superb through ball, and the forward found the net in the 42nd minute to give Carlo Ancelotti’s side a 2-0 lead at the break.
India showed greater attacking intent after the interval, with Manvir Singh and Ryan Williams creating opportunities, but Brazil’s quality in the final third proved decisive. Samuel Lino made it 3-0 in the 58th minute after receiving the ball from Pedro before calmly finishing into the bottom corner.
Lino then completed his brace deep into stoppage time, cutting inside before firing a low effort past the Indian goalkeeper to make it 4-0. The result gave Brazil a convincing victory on their first-ever senior men’s international appearance in India.
For India, the scoreline was harsh on a side that competed well during periods of the match, but the encounter provided invaluable experience against one of the strongest teams in world football. The Blue Tigers now turn their attention to another major South American test against Uruguay in Kolkata.
