East Bengal FC produced a stunning performance in the biggest match of the Indian football calendar, defeating arch-rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant 4-1 in the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup final at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

The victory ended East Bengal’s 22-year wait for the Durand Cup and saw the Red-and-Gold Brigade equal Mohun Bagan’s record of 17 titles in the historic competition.

The final turned into an East Bengal celebration remarkably early. Bipin Singh opened the scoring in the 10th minute before Edmund Lalrindika took centre stage. The forward struck twice in quick succession to put East Bengal 3-0 ahead and leave Mohun Bagan facing a mountain to climb.

Mohun Bagan managed to pull one back through Manvir Singh, giving the Mariners a brief glimpse of a comeback. However, Edmund had other plans. The East Bengal forward completed his hat-trick before half-time, restoring the three-goal advantage and effectively putting the Red-and-Gold Brigade in complete control.

The second half was a different contest in terms of tempo, with East Bengal protecting their commanding advantage while Mohun Bagan searched desperately for a way back. The Mariners were unable to produce the response required, as East Bengal’s defence remained disciplined and comfortably dealt with the pressure.

For Edmund, it was a night to remember. His hat-trick in the final made him the defining figure of the Kolkata Derby and one of the standout performers of the entire tournament. His performance also added another unforgettable chapter to one of Indian football’s greatest rivalries.

The triumph carries particular significance for East Bengal. After more than two decades without the Durand Cup, the club have finally reclaimed the trophy — and they did it by defeating their fiercest rivals on the biggest stage.

With the 4-1 victory, East Bengal not only lifted the trophy but also matched Mohun Bagan’s record tally of 17 Durand Cup championships. The Red-and-Gold Brigade can now celebrate a landmark night in the club’s history, while Edmund Lalrindika’s unforgettable hat-trick will forever be associated with one of the most memorable Kolkata Derbies ever played.
