WIFA Inter District Championship 2024-25: Roundup So Far

The 2024-25 WIFA Inter District Football Championship for Senior Men provided a month of hard-hitting action, fresh challengers vindicating the richness of footballing talent throughout Maharashtra.

This year’s championship adopted a two-tier structure, with Tier-2 serving as the qualifying battleground for districts. Four groups of knockout matches were held across Jalna, Latur, Amravati, and Basmat, with the group winners earning coveted spots in the Tier-1 main event.

Tier-2 Qualifiers

  • Group A (Jalna): Raigad District Amateur Football Association overcame District Football Association Parbhani in the final round to secure promotion.
  • Group B (Latur): Aurangabad District Football Association edged Sangli District Football Association 1-0 in a tense decider.
  • Group C (Amravati): Hosts Amravati District Amateur Football Association triumphed over Thane Football Association on penalties.
  • Group D (Basmat): Chanda District Football Association defeated Akola Zilla Soccer Association to book their Tier-1 ticket.

Tier-1 Final Championship

The Tier-1 championship brought together Maharashtra’s elite district teams, joined by the four qualifiers, for a group stage and knockout showdown at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Stadium, Nagpur.

Mumbai after grabbing the top early on by Kamlesh Nadar lost to Kolhapur, Kolhapur’s young and dynamic striker Darshan Patil scored a sensational brace to snatch the final place for Kolhapur.

While the Host Team and the reigning champions Nagpur Defeated Pune in a one-sided display of 2-0 victory. Mohd. Owais Ashraf scored in the 6′ to provide early lead and Yash Shukla scored in the 61′ to put the game to bed.

Mumbai dominated a heated contest, with Arfat Ansari scoring a brace and Mohd Khatib, Shivam Yadav, and Zeeshan each adding a goal. The match saw high tension with five yellow cards and three red cards issued.

The stage is now set for a thrilling final at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Stadium, Nagpur, where defending champions Nagpur will look to retain their crown against a determined Kolhapur side. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
