Why This MFA Premier League 2025 Season Feels Different

by Chandler D'silva November 14, 2025

The Mumbai Premier League is back, and this year already feels bigger, louder, and more unpredictable than ever. With Mumbai’s top clubs ready to battle for the ultimate championship, the 2025–26 season brings a new wave of energy—powered by fresh signings, rebuilt squads, rising young players, and a fan base that’s more excited than ever before. Every team enters with something to prove, and that alone sets up a season that could deliver drama from the very first matchday.

Group A is stacked with storylines. India On Track (IOT FC) return as the defending champions, carrying the pressure of repeating their success while every other team prepares to target them. Their title run last season raised standards across the league, and this year they face an even more competitive field.

Meanwhile, Waves FC are one of the biggest talking points having climbed from the third division with back-to-back promotions, they now enter their first MPL season with huge crowds behind them. Their fearless, attacking style and loyal fanbase already make them one of the most exciting teams to watch. Add Mumbai City FC, Reliance Foundation Young Champs, Kalina Rangers, Hope United, DK Flag Foundation, Bombay Gymkhana, and Sellebrity FC, and Group A becomes a battlefield of different styles and ambitions.

Group B carries just as much fire. MYJ Mumbai, who already enjoy strong support, are expected to gain even more followers this season as they also compete in the I-League 2. Their dual campaign gives them added momentum and visibility.

While MYJ gets ready for their I league 2 season another team is gearing up for their debut in the I league 3 that is Mumbay FC who have picked up some exciting youngsters talent from across India after securing their spot. Mumbay FC formed a partnership with Magic Made Soccer Solapur which entered the 2024–25 Maharashtra State Senior Men’s Football League. MMS Solapur ended up winning the tournament unbeaten and were declared the champions of Maharashtra. Since MMS Solapur was its sister club, Mumbay FC was granted a slot in the 2025–26 I-League 3.

Traditional forces like Kenkre FC bring experience, while dynamic sides like MSP, PIFA Sports, Iron Born FC, Millat FC, CFCI, ICL Mumbai, and Mumbai Ultras add unpredictability and hunger for upsets.

What truly sets this season apart is the massive shift in squad-building. Almost every club has made major changes—bringing in players not only from Mumbai but from across India. This diversity of talent, mixed with young academy prospects, means the league will be harder, faster, and more competitive than ever. On paper, there is no clear favourite. Even the defending champions will have to fight harder this time.

Across the city, the buzz is unreal. Clubs are dropping teasers, fans are debating lineups, and players look sharper and hungrier in pre-season sessions. With new faces, higher stakes, and rivalries heating up again, the MPL feels like it’s entering a new era—more professional, more unpredictable, and more passionately followed.

This season promises chaos, surprises, packed stands, dramatic finishes, and football that captures Mumbai’s spirit. If the build-up is any indication, this might be the most exciting MPL season yet. The countdown has begun, and Mumbai is ready.
